Possible causes. not threaded correctly, actual probelm with tension, burr on neelde plate presser foot or looper. check to see if after you thread that particular tension if there is any resistance on the thread after it passs thru tension, if not see if thread or lint is in tension disc. clean out it present then try again.

SERGER HAS BEEN RETHREADED AND HAS A NEW NEEDLE BUT WILL ONLY SERGE FOR ABOUT 1.5 " and THE THREAD BREAKS AND LOWER LOOPER COMES UNTHREADED.

Serger thread breaks

1. Is the serger threaded correctly?

2. Is the needles inserted correctly?

3. Is one of the needles bent or damaged?

4. Is the tension adjusted too tightly?

5. Is the tension adjusted to accommodate thickness of thread being used?

6. Are you using inferior quality thread?

7. Is the thread feeding off the cone/spool freely?

8. Is the needle size correct for the type of fabric being used?

9. Are the needles being used the correct one for the serger?

10. If all of the above suggestions don't help then the serger needs to be checked for a timing problem at a sewing machine repair shop.

I have a Singer 14SH654 (overlock) and broke the foot piece that is attached to the shaft. I can't find a diagram to identify the part number so I can order a replacement.

Call Singer at 1-800-4singer and they can advise you. They have a website at www.singerco.com and you can download your manual manual for free, kind of nice to have a back up on your computer, plus have the luxury of enlarging the diagrams.Another tip, go to www.sewingpartsonline.com and you can see what your part should cost approximately, plus identify what your part is called. Good luck

Lower looper problems

Some sergers require they be threaded in a particular order. If not, they do not "knit" the threads.

Raise the thread antenna to it's highest position.

Open the tensions (set at zero). If the tension settings are automatic, raise the presser foot to open the tension settings.

Turn the handwheel so the loopers are at their highest position. There may be a mark on the side of the serger to match up with a mark on the hand wheel for this.

Open the front of the serger and the threading guide should be printed on the inside of the serger door, or on the serger.

Start at the right and note which looper is threaded first and then the needles.

You can find more information and manuals at the Singer Co website.

I had read where someone said their lower looper tension dial had pulled apart. Sure enough, mine had too. We snapped it back together and Voila problem solved!

Sounds like the timing is a little out.

If you remove the needle plate and turn the handwheel manually watch for the lower looper as it swings behind the Left needle....the needles ought to rise by only about 2mm before the looper passes......the looper must pass the needle above the eye to catch the thread, and be so close as to be barely touching the rear of the needles......if the left needle thread is not picked up, it may be the timing, or the distance between needle and looper.

For the uninitiated, there are a myriad of variables in correctly timing an overlocker (serger), and without the manual to refer to the correct parameters, you will rapidly descend down a road of despair....if you move a looper to advance or ****** the timing, you risk looper collision and a broken looper is almost as much as a service, so my advice is do the test to see if the timing is the likely culprit, and if so, take the opportunity to give the old girl a treat.

If you need to save for a while to do it, just use the 3 thread option for the time being.

Upper and Lower Looper Rub Together!!

Your loopers need adjusting, impossible to explain how to do this, you need to be shown. Can I suggest you contact a sewing machine tech, sure it will cost but if he is a decent guy he will show you how to adjust the machine.
