Question about Intermatic T104 24h 208-277v Mechanical Time Switch

1 Answer

I have an Intermatic pool pump timer. The motor for the clock is running, but the on of switch will not trip. I made sure the stop/start pins are properly on. I did recently replace the switch below for our new booster pump. When I hooked up the wiring for the booster pump I accidentally crossed some wires on the booster pump and fried the powewer switch. Being that it is also wired to the timer is it possible I fried it too?Not sure because the motor for the clock is still working.

If the motor doesnt have enough power to trip the switch you will have to replace it. The motor assembly is replacable without having to replace the whole box. I know you can get them at Lowes and Home Depot.

Pool pump breaker tripping

1) Not likely the timer is problem, unless there was fire or overheating in timer box. Use nose and eyes to inspect for signs of high heat.

2) Eliminate timer as suspect:
Move wires on timer to test if timer relays have gone bad.
Move terminal 4 to terminal 3
Move terminal 2 to terminal 1
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-T104-Intermatic-timer.html#T104

3) Check watt rating of Hayward pump, and voltage.
1Hp motor at 240Volt draws 8 amp, and can draw 6 to 8 times that amount when starting. Up to 100 feet, should be at least 12 gauge wire and double-pole 20 amp breaker. Over 100 feet, 10 gauge wire and 30 amp double-pole breaker is best.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Color-codewire.html#motor

4) Intermatic T104 240V timer is rated 40 amps
Can safely handle 1 Hp motor without nearing heat-rating capacity of timer

5) Make sure the motor is wired correctly for 240Volts.
If motor is wired for 120, and 240 is applied, then tripped breaker can result.

Pool time switches pool on, but off does not trip off, and can't do it manual. When I push it on off, the pool pump tries to stop but continutes running. Have to use breaker box.

Model number of timer is not known.
Is this new installation? Or installation that worked before and recently stopped working?
If the manual override lever on timer does not turn Load on-off, then 1) wiring is wrong or 2) timer has gone bad or 3) pump has a short.
I suspect a short since you say the pump 'tries to stop running.'

Intermatic T104 timer wont turn pump on,despite being tripped

If override lever snaps back and forth crisp, and turns pump ON-OFF, then timer switch is good.
Try installing new trippers. The trippers wear down and start to slip over the trip lever.
If pump does not turn on-off with override, look for loose wires at breaker or pump.

Hi - My Intermatic T101P3 timer motor stops after it turns off the pool pump. I have one start and one stop time in a 24 hr period. I have to manually start the pump at the timer in the morning,...

Sounds like the clock leads are on the wrong posts, or at least the hot one is. If if was moved to the load side then manually starting the timer will also power up the clock motor. As soon as the clock trips the off timer, the pump and the clock motor are both off. Examine the clock leads to the wiring diagram inside the clock box cover to ensure they are connected correctly. I bet you'll find one of the wires is misplaced.

The timer clicked OFF but poot pump kept running. Had to trip breaker to stop pool pump.

Your Intermatic timer has a manual override.
The override is a good diagnostic.
Click the manual override and see if pump turns on and off.

Next, watch if the clock is rotating.
If the clock is rotating, the OFF tripper may be worn out and you need a new tripper

If the clock wheel is not rotating, you need a new clock motor.
If you have T104, your clock motor is 240Volts
If you have T101 or T103, your clock motor is 125Volts
Buy trippers and clock motors at Grainger
Clock motor replacement takes a small star-screwdriver bit
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/timer-accessories/timers/electrical/ecatalog/N-8hi

If your manual override is not working, then the gears might be rusty and need to be cleaned or your timer needs to be replaced.
You can buy same model number timer and then swap the insides without changing boxes.

Timer stopped running so I replace timer motor. However the timer still does not run. I can still turn pool pump on manually. Will I have to replace entire unit?

T103 clock motor is 125 volt WG1570
1) If you bought the 240V WG1573, the clock will not operate
2) If you connected the motor wires to wrong terminals, then clock will not operate.
3) If original box label says T103, but 240V T104 was installed in same box, and you bought wrong voltage motor
4) Test for 120Volts across terminals A and 1, and make sure clock motor matches voltage of timer, and clock motor wires are connected to terminals A and 1.

Intermatic timer for my pool pump - clock is not running

Usually the timer motor is bad when that happens. Replacement timer motors are available from websites like this one:
http://www.aplussupply.com/intermatic/timermotors.htm

Be sure to get the right voltage timer motor. Intermatic T101's and T103's use a 120 volt timer motor (Cat# WG1570) and the T104 uses a 240 volt timer motor (Cat# WG1573).

If you don't want to mess around replacing the timer motor, you can purchase a new timer, and as long as the existing enclosure is in good shape, just swap out the guts.

T104 clock stopped running. must now use switch

Yes, you can replace the timer motor to solve the problem. For the Intermatic T104 you'll need to purchase the 208/277 volt timer motor. Part number is WG1573.
http://www.aplussupply.com/intermatic/timer.htm

If you don't want to mess with replacing just the timer motor you can purchase a new timer and swap just the guts with the old timer as long as the existing enclosure is still in good shape.
