No... I tried that already. I've taken the entire thing apart looking for some "at-mount chip", with no success.

My experience. I needed to restore to factory conditions because of a glitch that slowed the computer and made it crash every so often. I recieved no CD's with the Dell 1318 and noticed the recovery partition on the hard drive. I went to the "Repair my Computer" bios screen and, of course, I didn't know the username or password. I researched online, as most of you have done, and found many solutions stating that by removing the bios battery or swapping jumpers you could reset the password. I'm not hardware savy but I did open the back and saw nothing resembling a battery or jumpers. Maybe those that have done this with success could supply some pictures to help those of us along the way. There were also several sites that offered software that they guaranteed would reset the password or tell you what it was. With so much bios password resetting softwareof that out there, I just NEW I would google and find the software that REALLY worked. It would be praised beyond belief and show up everywhere. Never did, so I never trusted the sites. Maybe they do work, I don't know. SO, I went straight to the source, Dell. Yes, my warranty had expired and I was willing to pay the $59 to go to the source and have the experts tell me the password or how to bypass it. THEY COULD NOT DO IT!!! Of course the tech guy was foreign and hard to understand, put me on hold to ask around about my problem and came back and told me they couldn't do it! So, they are sending me the CD's to restore my computer. Oh, the tech guy was nice and told me that they would call me back after I recieved the CD's and step me through it. What a waste. The restore partition is sitting right there on my computer...and I can't access it.

A. By Using the Motherboard Jumper:
In most motherboards CMOS battery is soldered, which makes it difficult to remove the battery. In this case we use another method.
Almost all motherboards contain a jumper that can clear all CMOS settings along with the BIOS password. The location of this jumper varies depending upon the motherboard brand. You should read your motherboard manual to check its location. If you don't have the manual then look for the jumpers near the CMOS battery. Most of the manufacturer label the jumper as CLR, CLEAR, CLEAR CMOS, etc.
When you find the jumper, look carefully. There will be 3 pins and the jumper will be joining the center pin to either left or right pin. What you need to do, is remove the jumper and join the center pin to the opposite pin. e.g. if the jumper joins center pin to left pin, then remove it and join center pin to right pin. Now wait for a few seconds and then again remove the jumper and join the center pin to left pin.
Make sure to turn the PC off before opening the cabinet and resetting the jumper.

B. By Using Software:

I have found that BIOS/CMOS Password Recovery Tool is the most effective.:
BIOS/CMOS Password Recovery Tool is a program that works instantly to remove any lost or forgotten BIOS/CMOS password. Simply boot your PC to DOS and execute the program, and get access to forgotten BIOS/CMOS passwords in just seconds

How To Erase Dell Inspiron Hard-drive Password

I dont know of a Dell Inspiron Hard-drive Password, but if you are speaking of the account password...then you can go into the control panel into user accounts and do that. Otherwise someone has to change the jumper settings on the system board to remove the BIOS password.

Each Dell has a master password which will clear the BIOS password. You can get this number by calling Dell Technical Support at (800)624-9896.

Dell Technical Support will request the Service Tag and Express Service Code from the bottom of your unit.

Let me know if this helps!

Where can I locate the jumper to clr the bios for Dell Inspiron 1318 laptop

There is no jumper -- there rarely are any jumpers inside a laptop.

Enter BIOS SETUP, and choose "Load BIOS defaults".
