I have a 7410 that is 16 months old with the same problem. It is not a broken spring. Spent over an hour on chat attempting to trouble shoot. HPs only solution was to sell me an "upgrade" for over $300 (which is more than I paid for this piece of junk.)
I expect "top of the line" products to last quite a bit longer than that. The worst thing is that with this error popping up, it is absolutely useless for anything else like scanning or outbound fax.
It should be called an "all or nothing" printer.

You are right about the "extended paper clip".
Here's what I found when this happend on my two 7410's. Take a look at where the ink cartridge slides into it's holder. Shine a flashlight on the circuit board at the rear. You will no doubt find it has a puncture in it that breaks the little tracer wires on the board. The culpret is the tension spring arm. It likely has come off it's base support and when that happens, and you install a new cartridge, the cartridge will push the tip of the tension wire g right into the circuit board. After you fix the circuit board, apply some silicone glue to the spring base mount to hold it in place. I hope I can find the part and remove and replace it easily. That I haven't done yet.

View the user manual here. http://bizsupport2.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00449611/c00449611.pdf
go to page 60 and follow the instructions for replacing the ink cartridge, remember to have the printer on when you do.
Then go to page 62 and allign the print head automaticly following the instructions it gives.
This will re-callibrate the ink level on the printer and should read correctly for you.
