Is there a simple way to replace a fan belt on a Ford 8N?
This 8N has front drive hydralics, and there seems to be a shaft and a lot of stuff in the way. Am I missing something, or does the whole lower front end hydralic system need to come apart before the new belt can go on?.....Dave...........

The above link is an excellent site for help. Can you see if the shaft is turning when you try to shift the Sherman Hi/Lo transmission.?
The Sherman units are installed inside the housing between the engine and Ford transmission and I believe you would have to "split" the tractor to access actual Sherman unit. It sounds like either the Hi/lo lever is slipping on the shaft or has broken internally....good luck. Try doing a search for ( Sherman transmission Ford 8n tractor help) there are a lot of Old timer experts out there and this was a very popular addition to the 8n's
If you think there is a lot of rust or stuff that looks like rust in the radiator fluid then it is most likely not a thermostat problem. If the car has a lot of miles check if the water pump drive line to the fan feels loose. If so there may be a bad bearing. If it is an electric fan, well a belt still drives the water pump, so you may loosen the belt and test the same way. Make sure the radiator cap holds pressure well or the system will overheat. Also make sure there are no colapsed hoses.
the bendix unit on the starter shaft is sticking. You need to pull the starter and clean the shaft up and lightly grease it so the gear can move out when you engage the starter. worst case scenario you may have a badly worn shaft and need to replace it with a new starter. hope this helps you...
This is everything that i know that will make an 8N run hot...a stopped up radiator(inside)..a radiator that is filled with debris in the cooling fins..a bad thermostat(located in the upper radiator hose..if it has one).....a stopped up block..bent fan blades...fan shroud missing..a bad water pump..the fan belt slipping on the water pump ..a blown head gasket..low coolant..i hope this will help and one of them should fix it ..if not...please write me back
