Question about GE Refrigerators

1 Answer

No motor sound, no cooling fridge

Motor seems to be shut off and the fridge is not cooling. My wife adjusted the temperature and the motor shut down after that. There seems to be some air coming out of the vent in the lower section of the fridge but I dont know if that is cold left from when the motor was working or the motor in "low mode". I unscrewed the back cover but I really dont even know what I was looking at. There was a small hot black tank, cooper tubing that led to the coil and wiring. I've had this refigerator for about 2 yrs.

Thank you in advance for any help and if you need more info please let me know

Raise your cooling knob to higher levels - just to troubleshoot raise it to maximum and see if the compressor runs. When your compressor cycles off, so does your evap fan, it should not be spinning ! Keep the thermostat to highest position, this is to rule out thermostat poblems, otherwise you will need to call for service and check your control board and compressor relay/run capacitor, etc. More likely a therm out of calibration or set too low.

Why does my fridge not cool, the fan doesn't kick on and the black little tank gets really hot?

A fridge operates due to adiabatics, which is the ability of a gas to absorb energy by compression, which turns to heat, then dispel heat by evaporation. The little black tank is a compressor which compresses the gas in the condensation loop. When the gas is compressed it heats up, so the little back tank will get hot, as will the condensation grid, often at the back of the fridge, which acts like a radiator to cool down the gas inside. When the gas is evaporated into the evaporation loop, it expands again and any rise in temperature caused by the compression will be lost. Add to this loss in temperature caused by the radiator and you have a total net loss in temperature which is significantly cooler than what you started with.
The problem with your fridge has to start with the fan not working as this fan will help to cool the condenser radiator, unless it is a fan inside the unit itself which just distributes the cool air. (without knowing the make an model of the fridge I cannot determine the reason for the fan). Modern low energy fridges have a better and more economical set-up and it seems that your fridge has seen better days. The compressor is clearly working overtime to get so hot and particularly if it never seems to shut down or the fridge cool down. Sadly, I think it's time for a new fridge. You'll save the money you are currently spending on the electricity to run the old one.

Fridge troubleshooting

The motor should not be running continuously. If it is, then it is because the internal temps are not going down low enough for the thermostat to shut the compressor down. If the temp is not low enough, the temperature of the coolant returning to the compressor is higher than what it should be and that the cool refrigerant returning to the compressor cools that motor down. If it does not, the motor will over heat and often shut down for cooling.

Ice buildup on the evaporator coils will cause a warmer running fridge. If the unit has a self defroster then it is not working and responsible for the anomaly.

Not cooling

If it has a starting capacitor, it may be defective. If not, a hard start capacitor kit may force it to start and run again. Also unplug fridge 20 minutes and let the motor cool down. They have high temperature shut off thermostats to help prevent other problems.

My unit works great on AC (cools to 30degree), but

Your fridge has two manual settings to adjust it's internal temperature. Obviously, it most likely has a standard control (1-5 or 1-9 depending on the fridge) that you can adjust on the control panel. Some fridges are preset (no control panel adjustment) and must be adjusted on the inside of the unit. If open your fridge, look at your cooling fins. You will notice a metal slider on a wire attached to one of the fins. Moving this sensor up or down along this fin will set the internal temperature of the fridge. You will have to play with it a bit to get it set properly (with a thermometer), but you should be able to get it to the proper temperature. I hope this solves your problem. Thanks... John Charles

Refrigerator area is not maintaining cold, freezer seems fine

The freezer is usually cooled by the compressor, the fridge is then cooled by an evaporator fan motor ($30). If this fan seizes or slows down then the fridge warms up (it sometimes starts squealing before this happens). It could be that your drain hose is clogged or frozen. Maybe the temperature adjuster go bumped.

If you think it is the evaporator fan motor:
Check to be sure you can get a replacement fan first, they last about 4 - 5 years. Can get from a parts supplier or electric motor company.
UNPLUG fridge. Located usually in top of freezer behind a vented cover plate. Remove cover, remove screws holding fan in, may have to cut wires. Replace with new motor, make sure the fan pushes air into the freezer area and doesn't spin backward drawing air from the freezer area.

Fridge compartment is not cooling down to set temperature

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp ..
