Question about Toro Lawn Mower With Toro Power Tools

Toro LX 420. Just bought it used from a Toro dealer. Started up fine, ran 10 mins. I got off for ten minutes and now the starter will not engage. High-pitched whine. Battery reads 11.4 on the digital display. Foot on brake, transmission in neutral, pto off.

Does the high-pitched, electronic whine sound familiar? The machine has 179 hours on it.

The starter has a centrifugal engage that when it spins it will move up and interface with the flywheel. When they get weak they will fail to engage on a hot engine, and eventually will fail completely.

My advice is if you bought it from a Toro dealer, they should take care of it for you, but if not, it is not an extremely hard job, nor expensive to replace the starter drive.

Hope this helps.

yes, it sounds just like the starter turning but not engaging. Like I said I think a good Toro dealer will take care of it if you just bought it.

Just purchased a toro zero turn mower at garage sale. Ran very well first couple weeks. I was running it the other day, shut it down, jumped back on 10 mins later, mower does not start.

You'll need to check all the safety switches. Probably one in the seat, one for the mower engaged, one for clutch/parking brake engaged, possibly one for reverse gear selected, and possibly for position of the steering arms.

My toro lx 420 wants to stall when engaging the blade sometimes..also when I push on the reverse, it acts like to wants to stall as well...any easy troubleshooting ideas? runs fine when not engaged

Try rolling when you engage instead of in the still position may be too much on the motor, either that the belt is loose or needs to be replace. Or u need a carb adjustment at the idle.

Why does my 1999 Ford Expedition eating starters after replacing valve cover, removed cruise control box but it is back exactly the same?

Its your starter shims. Put shims in , what is happening is your starter gear is remaining engaged even after it starts thus it tears up the starter and the gear. It may take 2-3 shims. When you replaced your first starter did it have shims? I am willing to bet it did. Give it a try and i bet this fixes your problem. Good luck

Does the hour meter in a toro tractor lx 420 show Tenths?

Best way to check that out is to run it for six or seven minutes and see it the number changes by .1 and if it takes an hour of running to move the nkmber you will know that it reads hours nit tenths.

I have a Toro LX 420. Bought in 2006. Put a new battery in and I get a click sound under the seat where the battery and solenoid are when I turn the key. Is it the solenoid or the starter?

Most likely it is the solenoid especially if the battery is new but the only sure way to tell is to test the battery with a volt meter for 12 volts or more or use a HEAVY jumper wire and cross the two large posts on the solenoid. If it cranks when you cross them, replace the solenoid. don't hold the wire on too long, it will get hot and melt the insulation

88 Toyota Corolla backfires through carburetor.

If that is carbureted, and has a mechanical fuel pump, try running a length of fuel line from inlet side of pump to a gas can that has fresh, clean fuel, and if it runs good that way, you know problem is most likely in the tank. Removing the tank & cleaning it out is best solution from there. I'd even be tempted to add a small bottle or 2 of Lucas Fuel Sytem Cleaner to first fill in clean tank, just to help clean lines as well as carb.

Starter flywheel is not engaging motor

If you blew a fuse you could have a grounded wire someplace. Check the wiring on the solinoid, on the battery, on the lights and anyplace there could have been a bear spot rubbed. If the flywheel does not engage check the flywheel gear on the end of the started to see if it is chewed and worn. These can be replaced easily,
