Friends computer hd dying, has bad clusters. Acer Aspire T160 desktop, no XP or recovery CD's. Where can I get them, she's 72 and poor, shouldn't even have a compter, BUT.Need to get it up and running. I can probably afford the HD, but full blown XP is still high even with 7 around the corner. I bought her the computer after she killed two others. She killed the monitor in less than a year. I need help.

Regarding the xp disk - no place online to download the full .iso - obviously there are torrents around, but beware of those - recovery cds are dependent on the manufacturer - and acer is subpar w/ providing downloads

that being said, try the following

On Windows XP, I'd start with a "chkdsk/R". (/R: "Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information"). Fire up a Command Prompt to run that command. You can access Command Prompt by going to Start, Programs, Accessories, and then click on Command Prompt.

Another highly regarded option is a product called "SpinRite" available at Gibson Research which may also do the deed.

Hope this helps - good luck!!

If the drive is not dead you can get a new drive and using the manufactures software (wd, seagate, and others have their own)
You can transfer everything on her drive to the new one. Once done you'll have to do nothing OS, drivers, and programs will all be there.

You could get a new hd and see if it will hold up long enough to clone the drive and copy all the files over using a program like norton ghost or others just a suggestion and you might be able to find just an oem copy of win xp on newegg.com for under like 50$ it will work just fine for her

I was restoring from the Acer recovery disk that I created when my process crashed before it completed. Now it won't boot up at all...HELP!

Your best bet is to reinstall the operating system. I couldn't count the number of times that the Recovery Discs created by users fail, it's very common. The only recovery that works a high percentage of the time is when the manufacturer puts a recovery partition on your hard drive.

You can try your Recovery Disc again, but if it produces the same results, just reinstall your operating system fresh. It shouldn't matter because either way you will lose your data.

To restore the machine to factory defaults you need to utilize the disks and/or program that came with your machine. If no have then you are SOL Read the manual that came with your machine since all companies have different protocols for achieving this objective. My son asked me to get the reboot CD

If you are able to boot into Windows, you can create a system recovery CD using the settings that your T160 had when it was shipped to you. Alternatively, you may just to reinstall all the applications and drivers your system was shipped with. You can find Acer's instructions on how to perform these tasks at the bottom of page 24 (page 15) of the following document: http://bit.ly/ftB7M2 (Create factory default image CD)

If you are unable to boot into Windows, you will have to contact Acer about getting a recovery CD. They may be able to provide you one for free if you are under warranty, otherwise you will have to pay.

How do i reset the acer erocovery management password?

Try the default password 000000. If that doesn't work, try this:
Here's what I found.
-Download Hiren's Boot CD 9.8
-Boot to it and boot into MiniXP
-After it loads, open Notepad and minimize it. You'll need it later.
-Open the Hiren's Boot Menu app and scroll to the "Recovery" menu, then select Partition Find and Mount.
-Select your physical HD and do a Normal Scan of the drive.
-Once you find the hidden partition (approx. 5Gigs), mount it as any unused drive letter.
-The AIMDRS.DAT file will be on the root of the drive. Now drag that file to Notepad that you opened earlier. Here's what it should look like:
[MyData]
PD=xxxxxx
HT=

whatever password you used should be displayed beside "PD".

Write that password down, reboot to Normal Windows and run the recovery managment tool.

ok heres how you remove bios password.

Open the door where the RAM is fitted and remove RAM from the holders. Look for two metal bars (GOLD?) near or between the RAM sockets.
Take a papare clip and short the bars out against each other. Replace the ram close the trap and reboot. That should do it
