SOURCE: I have an original freeplay clockwork radio which has died. Help!

If it is an original freeplay radio, it doesn't have rechargeable batteries as the first solution suggests. Chances are the solar panel became damp from exposure. Mine did this also, from leaving it outside nightly over time. The solar panel is gone unless you can find a replacement. Good thing the radios also run by winding them or plugging them in.

The "Resistor Color Code is explained very well at - -

Your question intrieged me so I opened up my own FPR2S and took a peep. I am getting old and my eyesight is quite poor now but I believe the color bands are Orange, Orange; Yellow; Gold which converts to:3 3 0000 @ 5% or, 330,000 Ohms @ 5%

I desoldered the R and measured it - - It is 330,000 Ohms

When turning the crank, the spring slips, and the crank flies back to original position. Spring will not wind up.

One day while cranking the freeplay PLUS Radio on a job site with no power, something inside snapped, and made a horrid grinding noise. All of my co - workers laughed. From then on I only used the radio with the AC plug in adapter.
After 8 years of keeping the freeplay plugged in to listen to it I finally decided to open it up and take a look.
Low, and behold I found some broken pieces that looked like a belt. HMMM?
After a little more investigating I found the 2 drive wheels that power the generator... with no belt on them. I looked in my junk drawer, and found a small blue rubber band amongst the others that I save from packaging items. It looked suitable to do the task. After stretching it around the generator drive wheels, I cranked it up, and IT WORKED!
I'm still waiting to see how long this fix works, but in a pinch... keep some rubber bands and a phillips head screwdriver around. This may be the same problem your having. I'm now getting the long lost last laugh.

Hope this helps! KMT

I broke the antenna on my BayGen radio. Any ideas on how to get a replacement.

Radio Shack, or any small electronics parts supply house will have one or can get one. Hope this helps.

Brand new polaris 500 won't idle, but runs fine?

It is probably your throttle cable freeplay. If there is too much freeplay the enginge thinks the cable broke and tries to shut it down. Try taking away some of it. It is easily done by pulling back the rubber boot that covers the cable adjuster. I think it should have about 1/4" at the most of freeplay. It should say in the owners manual.

Spring broken?

Solution #2 is correct. My Baygen Freeplay radio was running fast and mine had a broken belt. I could not find a belt on eBay. After hours of searching the internet, I fond a replacement belt at I have the older large Baygen Freeplay radio without solar power and this is the belt that fit my radio... AV-SBS9.5 Replaces SBX9.5 & 1407-36 & SCX9.5 square 9.5 x .047" belt, Baygen Freeplay. Just search the website above... they also have a second size Baygen belt that might fit the newer Baygen Freeplay radios???

No more self powerd source

I assume that the rechargeable batteries have expired. The trouble is that the batteries are hard-wired into the radio itself. Unscrewing the back and carefully replacing these with similar-rated cells would be possible but difficult. A poor design, which happened to mine too.

Dynamo problem

In the original big black Baygen radio there is a blue wire with a solder joint that breaks. This wire shunts part of the load back to the generator and prevents it from running to fast and going over-voltage. I am guessing that a similar problem is affecting your newer smaller radio. On the original radio after you take the two halves of the case apart there is a blue wire that comes from the 3v input jack on the back half of the case and goes to the radio circuit board near the top corner. The solder joint where the wire is soldered breaks easily. With this wire broken the generator will run to fast because there is very little load. The radio will still play if you slow the generator with your hand as it is playing back. If you resolder this wire the radio will work and the generator will run at the proper speed. This takes only a moment or two.

Good luck.
