SOURCE: Carriage jam

There's a small locking mechanism that holds the carriage in it's home position. This needs to be slightly sprayed with WD-40 or a similar lubrication (small amount). Problem solved.

SOURCE: How do you reset the ink levels on HP Photosmart

Are you using a factory new ink cartridge?
Please consider the following:
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridge that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead.
If you are using factory new cartridges, then please call the manufacturers Technical Support for assistance with the warranty on the cartridges

Brought the photosmart C4180 in the U.K. ,now living in Australia ,new compatable cartridges show an error message when installed

Just try to remove and reinsert the cartridges. You might also wanna clean the printheads with a damp lint free cloth. And See what happens.

I have just replaced my black ink cartridge and it shows allingment failed and my colour cartdige is low

Hi Paul,

I too have a C4180, and am getting Carriage Jam messages. I believe my problem to not be paper jams, but instead glob of ink that have collected under the cleaning mechanism on the right side of the printer. If you look inside you may find the same problem. There are (felt-type) absorbers and mine are soaked with ink, and the also some globs. There is a plastic tray that moves back and forth to clean the ink cartridges and it is no longer moving freely due to the ink.

I am trying to find a service manual to be able to disassemble and clean up properly the dripped ink. In the meantime I have used qtips, paper towwels and alcohol to try to remove the bulk of it.

Try this and let me know if it works for you.

Incorrect Cartridge Print cartridge in right stall not supported?

I changed the cartridge and it now works. I resent this though because it had been merrily printing before it decided it would stop and I have had to waste a three quarters full cartridge! I just hope the new one does not go the same way

i think you are getting a false paper jam.

> try this.
> unplug the power chord from the printer
> open the rear access door
> check whether there is any paper or any bit of paper stuck inside
> if so remove it
> if not, clean the rollers
> now plug the power chord
> check whether you are getting the message
> if you are getting try below
> unplug the power chord
> open the front door so that you will get full access to the cartridges
> now move the cartridges manually from right to left several times
> now plug the power chord
> check again
> if still you are having the problem
> service the unit
