Whilst you rarely print in colour, its important to know that you should try to print in colour at least once a week. This will reduce the risk of your colour nozzles blocking up.
Many people have gone out to replace their 'hardly used' colour cartridges when they dont work, thinking that they have dried up, when infact its simply blocked nozzles.
If you want to keep your colour nozzles and ink ready to run, just do a full colour alignment every 1-2 weeks. Minimal ink usage there and you keep your Canon MP780 running well!

You have it on a filter setting that extracts color...go into the menu and scroll to filters and change the setting.

SOURCE: i dont know how to
I have a Canon PIXMA iP2702 InkJet Photo Printer, I think it all works the same. Ok so here's what you do, go to print, the box pops up, go to properties on the right hand side, go to maintenance on the top, then go to ink cartridge settings and select black only from the list and "ok" that's it.

On the main copy display your device is probably set to the factory defaults which means that when you press reset the device is in "AUTO COLOR". Touch the "AUTO COLOR" tab on the screen and a drop down menu will show. Select "BLACK AND WHITE". Now press the "ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS"key. Select COPY SETTINGS located at the top right. Scroll down till you see STANDARD SETTINGS and select it. Press STORE. You are fixed!!! Please let FIXYA know I helped. :-) SPINAL
