I opened my printer while it was on and turned it off. As the carrier moved over and came into view, I found the problem. it had popped open, so I simply had to close it. Then, my printer worked again.

jmhomulos, your solution certainly put me on the right track, however it was the cartridge on the far left that was the problem on my 944. I used a firm plastic kitchen spatula to hold cartridge top down enabeling both cartridges to engage properly.
I would never have fixed it if not for your help, I did not even know what a carrier was and as far as Dell's solution, well, stupid leading stupider comes to mind.

Install old cartriage, if you still have it, let the machine tell you that it is empty, then go through the install process with one of the new ones.
