we took it apart. nothings loose. the vents are clean. the fan works intermittently. it has squeeked for months. put some more grease on the back end and the squeeking is better but still there. thats not the problem though. its the fan, just goes on and off.

have you isolated the fan and operated it w/o any other item on unit operating i.e. the heating element, another thing check your neutral connection from the input and see if theres any intermittant connections, this goes for all connections as they are under stress of hi humidity and heat acd cool cycles and can become brittle with time

Where is thermostat located on ge dryer, starts hot then it gets cool

Dryer possibly overheating due to plugged vent. They will go into a safe mode and shutdown the heater if not enough airflow. Results in starting hot but ending with a cold load of clothes! Check the belt to ensure the dryer fan is working and that the drum is properly rotating. If OK and the vent is clear then check the thermostat. Depengin on the type (Gas vs electric) there are a number of limit thermostats as well as a main thermostat. Likely you have a a limit switch kicking in to shut off the heater. Normally from lack of airflow (plugged vent, fan broken, etc...) Once unit cools down will start back up but shut down again once the heater comes on. Also check to see if the heating element is shorted to the side of the metal case. Will heat up and be intermittent.

There's a slight burning smell coming from the dryer drum.

Some item may have gotten between the drum that rotates and the housing and during the rolling of the drum this item may be heating up from the friction. Check closely to see if you can find anything rubbing on the drum.

HEAT PUMP

It is not normal to have a loud buzz associated with the electric heat. Try turning the heat off and running the fan only to see if the buzz continues. The buzz could be coming from any number of sources including an electrical component, the blower wheel, a loose fastener...etc.
The temporary smoke and smell could have been the dust burning off the element if the elements have not been used in a long time. However, if the elements have been running, it could be something got loose in your system and stuck between the blower and the heating elements.....for example, the wiring diagram could have come loose and worked it's way through the wheel. I've also seen owner's manuals left in the air handler that eventually got stuck in the blower. This should be inspected to ensure there is not a fire hazard.

I hope this helps and good luck. :-)

Heating elementglowing bright red funny smell

I
make sure the fan is working o/k, because if it is not, then the element will get bright red hot.
If the fan is working o/k, then the element will still get red hot, but not bright red.
If the fan is not working, then it needs replacing.
