Hoover F7220900 Brushes don't turn

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem? The switch to turn the brushes on is engaged and I have cleaned the screen on the bottom of the machine without any improvement. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for the help. There is a space between the top of the filter and the top of the cover. Is the screen the brush block? Also, how would I check to see if the turbine is bad? Are the brushes powered by suction?

If it helps, I smell a burned electrical smell when the machine is on. It seems to have full suction and lays down water and detergent.

    Thanks!

Thanks again for your help. It seems the turbine is a common problem. My brush block turns easily so I will look into the turbine. How is the turbine powered, by the way? Could you tell me how to disassemble the proper components to get to the turbine? Also, if you have a parts listing, that would be great since the Hoover site has NOTHING on this model.

I think I have the same problem, with the brushes not moving and a rubbery and electric smell when running. I'm guessing from previous experiences with old vaccuums, that the smell is a belt or motor issue inside the unit.

However, I can't seem to get the cover off to investigate. I removed the two screws behind the brushes and the 4 screws on the bottom of the unit, but the cover still won't come off? Are there screws that I'm missing or just a trick? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First off make sure that the filter inside the dirty water tank has a gap from the top of the cover to the top of the filter. The must comment problem when the brushes dom't turn is either the brush block, the shaft that goes into the turbinge broke off. If brush block is ok, then the turbine is bad and will have to be replaced.

  • Anonymous Jan 19, 2008

Take the brush block off, then watch the square slot up where the blush block was and turn it on to see if it is turning, if not, then you will have to replace the turbine. This what makes the brushes turn. Don't know what the electricl smell is unless it is coming from the motor.

There are several screws to take off from the bottom, then is a screw , then you can take the top cover off. Down near the front is the turbine, there should be 2 more screws, then the turbine will be loose and you can take it out. Part #41391005 prior to 12/02. Part # 43191007 12/02 and after. I am sure that this number has changed, but who ever you order this from will be able to note the change.

The brushes won't turn on my hoover steam vac dual v

Hi There,

Unfortunately the answer above is far from helpful. The filter has absolutely nothing to do with your brushes not spinning, and you can really replace the turbine yourself without having to take it into a shop to fix it. Here's a much more helpful diagnosing of how to check the brushes, and fix the turbine if needed.

There can be serveral things that may have gone wrong with your Hoover so that the brushes stop spinning. Unlike the other "expert" above I will walk you through step by step on how to diagnosis this problem, and fix it. Unfortunately there is no belt or band on this model, but instead it's actually a turbine assembly that drives this brush.

Possible Problem #1. Usually the most common problem when the brushes stop spinning is that the brushes have simply gotten clogged with something that is preventing them from spinning. Especially if you have pets in the home, this is a common problem. Here's how you can clean these brushes.

First, turn the machine upside down so that the brushes are facing upwards. Pull down on the upwards on the brushes and they will easily snap right out of the mahcine completely. . Use a pressurized water hose with spray nozzle is ideal) and spray each brush with water to dislodge any pet hair. You should be able to get these brushes spinning when you spray them. Spray each brush until the brushes are spinning pretty fast. Re-insert the brushes into the machine, and test to see if the cleaning has fixed your problem. It's important to make sure that the brush switch on the top of the machine is turned to "Rotating Brush Speed Hi", and that the handle of the machine is reclined down. There is an internal switch inside the machine that turns the brushes off when the machine is in the upright position, so you'll need to step on the handle release pedal to ensure that this switch is engaged. Hopefully the brushes just needed to be cleaned, and they will now work now that you have reinserted them. If this still didn't fix your problem, move on to the next possible problem.

Possible problem #2: If the cleaning didn't fix your problem, remove the brushes from the machine again. Once the brushes have been removed, the handle reclined, and the brush switch turned to fast, turn the machine on. Where the brushes were sitting you'll see a square shaped hole (pictured below) that the brush stem fits into that actually spins the brushes. This part should be spinning while the machine is on. Here's a picture of that part:

If this part is not spinning, then your Turbine Gear Assembly has gone bad and needs to be replaced. If this part spins however, then this indicates that your brush block is gone bad, and needs to be replaced.

Here are links to the exact parts for your model that may need to be replaced:

Here's also a link to a Fixya repair solution that I've done explaining step by step how to replace the turbine gear:

BRUSHES NOT TURNING

(1) Assure the Brush Control on the hood is NOT set to the OFF position.
(2) Remove the brush assembly by pulling/unlatching it from base on each side.
(3) Does one of the brushes have the drive pin present? It should be about ¼ inch square, and two inches long. It attaches the brushes to the drive mechanism.

Remove and clean the intake filter. One the base of the cleaner, behind the brushes, squeeze the two red abs together and pull the panel down to access the screen. Clean the hair/debris off the screen and reassemble

Brushes do not turn worked , fine last time i used it a month ago.

The brushes are run by vaccum. Take the brush out and there is a passage way in there that could be blocked. If I rememer correctly there is a screen in there. If that dont help then there is a spring hooked to a lever underneath so when you lay the back down it engages caccum to the rollers. It could be that this is stuck and not moving. Try moving it by hand with the scrubber running.

Brushes wont turn on shampooer

Dear Momneville
I have the same steamcleaner and had the same problem, I took mine apart a found a clog between the turbine and the wheel that the turbine moves by vacuum when it gets glogged there is no vacuum to move the wheel. If you are not mechanically inclined in suggest you do not take it apart unless you think you can get it back together properly.

Hope this helps

Brushes don't spin

Take out the screws from the bottom, there will 2 longer ones, they got into the turbine, turn it upright and take the top cover off. The turbine sits near the front, center, remove the 2 screws on the front of it, remove the hoses, then you can remove the turbine(#23).

I cleaned filter and the brushes are still not rotating.

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. It probably is not the filter that will start the brushes turning again, it may be a few other things. There is a switch in the front that indicates brushes on and brushes off, and the switch could be broken, it could be that the brushes come in an assembly and the assm could be belt driven and you would have to replace the belt or the drive mechanism the turns the brushes is broken. These are just suggestions and you should check the schematic in your owner’s manual under trouble shooting. If you don’t have a owner’s manual, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Brushes not working

Check the filter from the bottom, it has a red frame, pull it out far enough to clean it, if it is clooged, then the brushes won't spin. If it is clean, pull the brush block out, make sure the shaft that goes up into the turbine is not brokked off, if it is replace thebrush block. With the brush block out, turn on the machine and look up where the brush block goes, there is a square hole, if it is turning, then it is ok, if not, then the turbine is either clogged up or the turbine has gone bad.
