Question about Gateway Emachine Bestec ATX-250-12E PS 250w Replacement Power Supply Part Number P/N 100744 (PSATX25012E) Power Supply

1 Answer

My wife has an eMachines T1600 in her first grade classroom. It worked in June when class ended, but does nothing now when we push the on button. I suspect the Bestec ATX-250-12E power supply, since nothing goes on. Is there a way to test it before getting a new one? I am NOT a computer or electronics expert, although I can follow directions pretty well (installing hard drives, etc.).

Hello there martinsjak.

Here's your GEEK-steer ...

First, I'll presume you have of course "lamp-tested" the wall power outlet, as well as the power strip outlet you using, and that also the power cord is in good repair.

With that out of the way, kudos are in order, because your suspicion of the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is very well founded. It is THE most common PC component to fail. Although it could also be the case power button/switch itself, it's likeliest to be the PSU. But regardless of which, the easiest way to find out is to test the PSU.

You have three options:

  1. Manually test it using a multimeter ... Yuk! Only a guy with a plastic pocket-protector (and thinks it's impressive) would pick this one.
  2. Install the suspect PSU into a KNOWN GOOD working PC. If the PC powers up, you know the PSU works. If not ... well you get the picture.
  3. Test it using a PSU Tester. This is a surprisingly desirable option. Why? Because PSU testers are not very expensive, and if you're like most everyone else in this modern era, you'll be in need of testing more than just this one over the course of time. Check out this very solid choice for a Coolmax PS-224 ATX Power Supply Tester.
Which of the above three is your call. Easy-peasy, yeah?

Good luck to you, and thanks for posting back ...

Im a preschool teacher and i feel that I am not creative. I cant even draw. Is there a course for this that I can study?

You don't have to be ultra creative to teach preschool, you do however need to know how to make use of resources. The Internet is filled with resources that will help make your job as a teacher easier.

Some of my favorite websites for preschool crafts, activities, and song lyrics are: Kid Zone, DLTK Kids, and Kididdles for music.

As for classes that you could take, there are a number of them. There are basic early childhood education classes taught by colleges, but they do not really teach creativity.

One of my favorite places to learn creativity is Lakeshore Learning Centers. It's a store that sells teaching materials, classroom materials, etc. They offer free teaching workshops which are fantastic. The workshops generally have a theme, and they teach you everything from songs to crafts, games, and more. You usually get a certificate at the end, and some colleges will count their free workshops as part of your instructional hours. The classes are an hour long, and they even have giveaways where you can win supplies for your classroom. You can learn more about their workshops at:
http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/general_content/store_locations/teacherWorkshops.jsp

One of the best ways to learn hands down is to sit in on other teacher's classrooms. Talk to other teachers, let a parent helper take a day off, and enjoy seeing how another teacher runs their classroom.

Honestly, a lot of the ideas that I used in my classroom came from children's television programs like Barney the Dinosaur. I actually can't draw worth a lick but I learned the basics from a children's television program called Pappyland.

The key to creativity is to find what you are good at and go with it. Some people love to sing, play a musical instrument, and write song lyrics...I can't carry a tune in a bucket. But the thing about preschoolers is they don't care if you sing out of tune. If music isn't your thing maybe art is and you can show kids how to draw, paint, sketch, and so forth. There is also writing, playing with toys like LEGO, making up stories, playing with puppets, make believe, and so many other things. Find what you love to do and incorporate it into your classroom...that will go farther than all the training in the world.

Can Muslim pre school children listen to music?

There are so many cultures in today's society that it's hard to keep up with what is and what is not allowed. It's not so much Muslims, but the religion of Islam that has a problem with music. SOME people who practice Islam believe that music is forbidden. This includes listening to music, playing musical instruments, and singing songs. There are some Muslim parents who have decided that their children should not listen to music, because of their religion.

While I think it's wrong for a parent to make that kind of religious choice for their child, there's not really much that you can do about it as a teacher. A couple of solutions to diffuse the situation and keep the parents happy:
Talk to the parents - have a conversation with the parents about music and the role that it plays in your classroom. Explain which days you listen to music or have music themed classes and advise the parents that they may wish to not bring their child on that day

Talk to the child - explain to the child that their mom and/or dad does not want them participating in music activities. Offer the child a quiet alternative that will not distract the other children for him/her to participate in while the rest of the class has music time

Take the child to another classroom - if you have another classroom with similar aged children nearby, arrange for the child to go visit the other classroom for the period of time while your class will be participating in music activities

Finally, if all else fails, tell the parents it's your classroom and if they cannot agree with your policies that your class may not be the best place for their child.

My wife has a Nike Alpha Project watch with new battery. We cannot set the time. I press "Mode" and nothing happens. I hold it down and nothing happens. Perhaps the buttons do not work? Shawn

Maybe the button is not pushing the internal button properly. Undo the back and remove the watch unit from it's case and then see if it works when you press the internal button.
