Double check the position of the memory card's write protect tab - it should be slid away from arrow pointing at the lock position. If this is OK and the camera is brand new and can be easily returned to the place of purchase, do that and ask for them to correct the problem or replace the camera/card. If returning the camera is not an option, try cleaning the contacts on the memory card itself- a pencil eraser works well for this purpose. Be certain to clean any eraser crumbs from the memory card before inserting it back into the camera.

You need to format new cards in the camera for them to work properly.

Purchased new memory card for my canon powershot A520 and I keep getting a "memory card error". I've purchased two different cards and get the same error message. Original card that came with...

From page 145 of the A520 user manual, it appears that the largest SD memory card that this camera is able to use is a 512MB SD memory card. The manual is dated "2004", so this size limitation is not unusual for a camera of this era.
If you've purchased anything larger, there is a good chance that it won't work with this model camera.

I have canon powershot SX20IS. But it didn't connect to my laptop. My laptop and cable is ok. what should i do?

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.

My powershot a530 tells me memory card error and i dont have a clue where to even start to try to fix it

Having gone nearly two years without a response to my query, I assume my suggestion to use an SD card instead of an SDHC card solved the problem.

Using transcend 16gb with canon powershot sx20is. getting memory card error. Please help.

It might just want you to format the card in the camera. This will completely erase it so download any pictures from it first.

Memory card error - can't format card

If it is an SDHC card your camera is too old to support it.  You need to get an older-style SD card.

Camera display shows "memory card error".

I would give this software a try:
http://www.download.com/VirtualLab-Data-Recovery/3000-2248_4-10610841.html?cdlPid=10801131
and be more vigilant about backing up your pictures. Flash memory can corrupt at any time. Good Luck.

Defective memory card?

usually cameras will only come with a small amount of memory either built into the camera, or a small memory card.

its not uncommon to have only 4-10 pictures on this type of starter memory.

To get more photos you will have to purchase a larger memory card.
