I have just purchased a Canon Powershot SX20IS and it is telling me that i have no memory card, however, i have. any clues. i have taken out the internal battery but still comes up with error
Double check the position of the memory card's write protect tab - it should be slid away from arrow pointing at the lock position. If this is OK and the camera is brand new and can be easily returned to the place of purchase, do that and ask for them to correct the problem or replace the camera/card. If returning the camera is not an option, try cleaning the contacts on the memory card itself- a pencil eraser works well for this purpose. Be certain to clean any eraser crumbs from the memory card before inserting it back into the camera.

From page 145 of the A520 user manual, it appears that the largest SD memory card that this camera is able to use is a 512MB SD memory card. The manual is dated "2004", so this size limitation is not unusual for a camera of this era.
If you've purchased anything larger, there is a good chance that it won't work with this model camera.
Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.
I would give this software a try: http://www.download.com/VirtualLab-Data-Recovery/3000-2248_4-10610841.html?cdlPid=10801131 and be more vigilant about backing up your pictures. Flash memory can corrupt at any time. Good Luck.
hello!
YOu can remove the memory card and then connect to the memory card reader and goto the my computer then right click the drive created by windows and then you can directly format it.
You can format it also using the camera. go to menu and find the tools and then the format menu.
