My computer freezes when I add ram to the second memory slot. I have tested three different ram components 512MB and 256MB and none of them work. Is there a way to fix or replace the so that I can use both memory slots?

Have you tried reversing the two ram modules? Or better than that, install two new 1GB modules. And if you do not want to do that make sure the Slot 1 has the larger of the modules. Do you know that the memory modules both work?

Check and see if theres any dirt or dust in the open port and make sure there are no bent pins there, another solution is to look around for a 1 gig memory card if you cant fix the second slot hope this is helpfull

My dell latitude d600 is extremely slow. I have pi ctures and school papers i do not want to lose.....What can i do too help my computer?

I suggest you copy the school papers, and photos to disk/s, or flashdrive/s for safekeeping.
Then work on getting your computer to be faster.

1) A computer starts slowing down in performance once the Harddrive reaches 50 percent full.
You won't really notice until the Harddrive is at 70 percent full, but the computer has been slowing down all along

Remove unnecessary programs you do not use, and applications.
DO NOT remove Windows programs.
Just one's you have loaded from disk, or downloaded from the internet.

Go to Add/Remove Programs, and see if there any that can be deleted.
(Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Add/Remove Programs)

2) Defragment the Harddrive.
Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Free up disk space so programs will run faster

3) Clean up the Registry.
Every time you visit a website cookies are put on your harddrive. Tiny pieces of software, but after a while they add up, and take up harddrive space.

There are also fragmented files left behind after you have removed programs, and/or applications.
There are a lot of 'bits and pieces' left behind that are of no use, and take up harddrive space.

Using a Registry cleaner removes these fragments, and helps to speed up your computer's processes.
(Makes the computer faster)

I suggest CCleaner.
Why?
1) It works, and works well.

2) It's FREE. Works as well as paid for versions, and better than some paid for versions.
Don't let the fact that it's free fool you.

3) I have been using CCleaner for about 2 years now. Haven't had problem 1, and use it every time I'm off the internet.
Not advertising. Wouldn't do any good, lol! It's Free!

http://www.piriform.com/

Take a look around, 'Kick the tires',

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

Go to the right, and click on Screenshots.
If you decide to use Ccleaner, come back, and post in a Comment, and I'll step by step you through using it.

4) Maximize the Ram Memory. Of course we all have to watch our budget constraints, especially with the world economy the way it is.

The Maximum Amount of Ram Memory is 2GB. (2 GigaByte)
There are two Ram Memory slots. EACH slot has a maximum amount of 1GB.
Uses DDR Sdram at 333MegaHertz. (333MHz) [ PC-2700 ]
It is the SO-DIMM style of ram memory.

Documentation for the Dell Latitude D600 Notebook PC, from Dell Support, indicates the standard amount of ram memory that is installed, is 256MB.

[256MB + 256MB = 512MB
512MB + 512MB = 1024MB or also stated as 1GB ]

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd600/en/ug/specs.htm

Scroll down to the bold heading > Memory
Look at the sub-heading in the chart at the left > Memory module connector.
Indicates > Two user-accessible DDR Sdram connectors.

In plain English > Two Ram Memory slots.

Look at the sub-heading > Memory module capacities
128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1GB.

Plain English > Can use just one 256MB ram module, ('Stick'), or two of them.
Same with each amount listed.

Look at the sub-heading > Standard memory
256MB

Plain English > Comes from the factory with one 256MB ram memory module.

[Maximum memory = 2GB ]

With 256MB of ram memory, a crude comparison is that you could kick a football down the football field, and have to wait until next month for the other team to bring it back.
S-L-O-W!

512MB of ram memory?
Umm, next week.

1024MB? (1GB)
Now you're talkin'.
Return ball at the speed of a normal game.

2048MB? (2GB)
You'll think special effects are happening because the football game is almost over!

An exaggeration I'll admit, but the performance increase is worth it when using programs, and applications.
On the internet? You'll see an increase in performance, but nothing to really write home to Mom about.

'Optimizer', or 'Performance enhancer', or some other dribble advertised as the 'flavor of the day'?
Naa, I find them costly, and full of beans.

Just use the free software available, and tune your computer up through steps 1 and 2 above ,using what Windows has available.
Keep your money in your pocket, unless more Ram Memory is an affordable option at this time.

Regards,
joecoolvette.

Memory won't add on a Gigabyte GA-6VEML

Hi,
this will be dependant on the bios version. or if the 2 ram modules are identical or not. if they,re a matched pair. the motherboard may not like or run in dual-channel mode. sometimes adjustable in the systems bios. the other suggestion, is to try 1 stick of ram, in each slot individually. This will eliminate A Faulty Slot. Failing any Of The Above. try 2 x 256mb sticks, And Obtain The Latest Bios Update from The Manufacturers Website.

According to Hp website your computer will handle two 512 Mb RAM chips. Make sure they are PC133. If computer will not boot with both inserted properly, one of them is bad. Put one in slot 1 and none in slot 2 and see if it boots. Then switch the chips put the extra chip in slot 1 and none in slot 2. See if it boots. This way you can troubleshoot a possible bad chip.

Beeping noise after installed memory on ecs motherboard L4S5MG

Some older computers, like mine, have a maximum memory they can handle. This one happens to be 1 gig, but yours may be less. Do you have an older computer? Yup, you do. As seen here, the maximum supported ram is 256. I'm sorry. Please rate.

Ram memory Problem?

Go to http://www.memoryx.net and run the 'Identify my computer' bit, clicking on 'Scan my system' and follow instructions.

The other thing is that if the MAX is 512, you'd want low-density memory.

IBM ThinkPad T40 2GB Max RAM

The T40 has two ram slots, you can put a 1g chip in each totaling 2g. If the chip will remove, then it is changeable. Vista needs a minimum of 256 to run, so, when you change BOTH chips to equal 2g it will probably read 1.744g, or it may read the full 2g. If it only reads 1g, then the second slot under keyboard may have malfunctioned. It could also be that the 256 chip is bad and your really only running 512 now. With all that said, in order to achieve 2g, you will need to put a 1g chip in each slot.
