Question about Dell Dimension 4100 (-JM0TB01) PC Desktop

3 Answers

I get the BIOS screen and then it turns to a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. Even if I try to go to setup or boot menu it will do the same thing. Over the last couple days I have had to repair the Boot.ini several times. I just recently upgraded to XP SP 3. Any advice for me if I can't even access any of the BIOS menus or anything else for that matter?

Disconnect all devices from the power supply EXCEPT the motherboard
Remove any extra cards including video etc.(plug monitor into the onboard)

If you hear any beeps these can indictate where the fault is.
either of these sites below will help you further with that

Beep codes P
c

More beep codes

Power up the pc and see if the fans are working.
If not then double check the power connections to the board.

If you still have no fans it is time to suspect the power supply as the probable cause.

If the fans worked then you should have gotten a display which told you there was an error and offering you a chance to go into the BIOS. ignore it and shut down the PC.

Now connect one drive only and boot again.

Repeat that until you identify the component that is giving you a problem.

Once you find the problem then remove or disconnect and carry on with the rest to see if another component might also cause a problem

If there is only one problem device then you may want to investigate that device further, Unless you don't mind replacing it

Sometimes this indicates that there is a problem with your hd or other components, Try booting off your winodws cd/dvd and go to the repair console and enter "fixmbr" See if that helps. If it is an older version of windows (311, 98, 95) try running fdisk from boot disk and make sure the partition is active.

Hope this helps

It wont boot, goes to black screen with whit blinking dash

Yes, this sounds like the traditional black screen issue, but it's different! This machine is a Dell Dimension 3000 with XP. System won't boot. After Blue Dell BIOS splash screen with F2 & F12 options, it just goes black. There will ultimately be a white cursor in the upper left hand corner. I can edit BIOS with F2, I can get in to the boot menu with F12, but I can't do anything after that. I can even get in to the Safe Mode menu (F8), but it never boots.

Screen is black and only shows cursor blinking in upper left hand corner. Keyboard not responding. Changed the keyboard 3 times.

Start the computer up and repeadetly keep pressing DELETE to access BIOS menu, Once BIOS menu is aquired make sure that BIOS can see your main harddrive, If that checks out then you may need to set your booting device order to boot the harddrive that contains your Operating System. If that still does not work then you may have a bad motherboard.

PC won't boot up just get blinking cursor in the upper left corner of screen

That blinking cursor is the way in which the BIOS is telling you that Windows is missing - its most critical, core files have been corrupted beyond repair. The only thing you can do is to reinstall using the recovery cd.

Black screen and in the upper left corner there is a cursor theat is blinking ... and teat is all

It sounds like a problem loading the operating system. Try booting from an installation CD to see if anything comes up... if it loads from the CD, there could be a problem with your hard drive.
When it turns on, try entering the BIOS by pressing the correct key (usually DEL, F10, F12, or F2) Make sure that the boot device is set to your hard drive. If you do this and it loads with an error saying 'insert boot media' or 'boot device failed' you'll have to either try fixing your boot sector (which can get tricky, but I'll walk you through it if you really want to attempt it) or a much easier fix, reinstall the operating system.

Black screen w/blinking cursor

So.. you can select safe mode? Or you turn it on and it is resuming into the blank screen?

If the latter. Unplug the power, pull the battery out for 20 seconds or so. Then put it all back together and try booting up.
