If every thing is correct ( the Battery, the AC adapter, etc ) then also the Power light is not turning on, then somewhere the power is not transmitting. The laptop must have a internal connection Breakage. Oh, I saw that you didn't mention AC Adapter. Have you checked it. Also check the the Control Board of the Laptop. Better you give it a Servicing.
Thank you Sir, Have a nice day.

Try another known good working battery and if it doesn't charge and hold the charge properly,

If that doesn't work, try another know good working ac adapter to see if it is actually charging the battery properly.

If that doesn't fix it then you know for sure at that point the motherboard is bad.

Take out the battery and try running it on the power adaptor alone. If this works, you have a dead battery. If not there's something more serious wrong in the machine.

I have recently purchased a replacement battery for my HP zd8000 laptop. The problem is that the laptop is calibrated for the old battery and doesn't appear to even want to charge the new one. Any help...

You should first try to recalibrate the notebook and battery using the following steps: (this should be done every three months also as short charges and discharges really mess it up and will give you a false reading)

Step 1 - Disable the Windows Power Management

In Windows, right-click the Desktop and select Properties in the menu list.
Click the Screen Saver tab and then click the Power button.
Under Power schemes, select Always On in the drop down menu.
Under Settings for Always On power scheme, select Never in each of the drop down menus.
Click OK on the Power Options Properties window and then click OK on the Display Properties window.

Step 2 - Fully charge the battery

Connect the AC adapter to the notebook.
Charge the battery until the Windows battery meter is at 100%.

Step 3 - Fully discharge the battery
Remove the AC adapter.
Keep the notebook on until the battery has completely drained and the notebook automatically turns off.
Connect the AC adapter to the notebook.
Keep the AC adapter connected to the notebook until the battery has completely charged.

Step 4 - Enable the Windows Power Management

In Windows, right-click the Desktop and select Properties in the menu list.
Click the Screen Saver tab and then click the Power button.
Under Power schemes, select Portable/Laptop in the drop down menu.
Click OK on the Power Options Properties window and then click OK on the Display Properties window.

Now...
If you go into Control Panel, Power Options, and select the Power Meter tab, what does it say?

If you are still having issues, then do the following and then go back through the recalibration process:

Try going into Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management then down to devices and there should be an entry for batteries. Select that and right click to select scan for hardware changes.

HP Pavilion ZD8000 - Battery

i have the same situation. The workround I use is this...
Method 1
Start the laptop with the mains disconnected
Once Widows is running plug in the mains adaptor
The battery will charge correctly, the laptop will run on the battery if the adaptor is unplugged

Second method if the battery is flat
Start up with the battery removed
Once windows has started - plug in the battery
The battery will charge correctly

I have found no permanent solution so I use method 1 mostly

sounds like the battery may be bad. I would first suggest trying a replacement battery and see if it will charge if so problem solved; if however a replacement battery (that is known to be good) still does not work it is possible that your battery charger on your laptop has gone bad, which is possible but very rare.

Boot up problem

Sounds like a hardware problem to me Ken. The indicator lights on the front of the computer don't necessarily mean anything unfortunately. If you have left the system off for 3 hours, (with the AC attached and charging the battery), but it still won't boot from the battery exclusively then I would suggest contacting HP for support. If you still somehow are within the first year of warranty, they will probably send you a new battery, failing that, they would service the notebook and have the motherboard checked to ensure the charging unit is correctly passing current to the battery. I don't believe that accessories are covered by an HP extended warranty so you might be out of luck there, however if you have a store warranty check the guidelines and see what is covered, you might be suprised. I hope this helps.

Battery is not charging

From HP website- worked immediately for me.
This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows Vista. Understanding battery charging issues If the notebook battery is not charging or the notebook does not indicate that the battery is charging, the most likely scenario is that the battery itself is operating correctly, but its power management software may have become corrupt. In order to correct the problem, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the power management software by using the Device Manager. This document will explain how to uninstall and reinstall the ACPI Battery listings in Windows Vista, as well as how to obtain and install updated BIOS files, if needed to correct other battery issues. Uninstalling and reinstalling power management software in Windows Vista In order to correct problems with the battery's power management software, follow the steps below.
  1. Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device Manager .
  2. Expand the Batteries category.
  3. Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall . WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver.
  4. On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes c01176420.gif . Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes .
Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's power. The notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging.
