Question about Kenmore Washing Machines

Smelly wet towels from front loading washer.

I have a front loading Kenmore washing machine. Recently I've noticed that when the clothes come out of the washer they smell funny, kind of ''musty''. Once they are dry, they're ok until they become wet again. This is particularly an issue with towels. The water isn't the culprit, it smells fine from all sources. Any ideas?

thanks for your suggestions, however there are no blockage issues and I've checked for lost pieces of clothing. I do have to frequently clean under the grey "boot" as it does tend to develop mildew. I leave the door open when not in use to help air it out.

This is very typical of front loaders..
What is happening is the door seals shut so no water comes out.. Consequently the air is trapped as well.. No ventilation at all. This causes a slight mildew - and this is what you are smelling..

Ways to avoid this unpleasant occurrence..
Run a white load and use some bleach.. This will kill any lingering germs and mildew..

Every wash there after - do you best to open the door right after the wash is done - allowing ventilation.. This will help you with your issue..

In other words - if you left a wet load in a top loader - after a day or so - the same thing would happen.. The wet clothes would get mildew and musty..

It is the same thing - only it happens much much faster in a front loader because it is sealed shut with no ventilation..

Have a great day..

HI. this may occur when there is a slow drain situation during the spin cycle that exist. this will cause water to settle, and mildew or mold will form, causing the smell to be transferred to the clothes during the wash. i suggest to check these most common problem spots for issues to further address this situation.

* Check that the drain line is clear
* Check the drain hose for kinks or blockages
* Check pump for blockages
* Check for build up of soap in the outer tub
* Check for article of clothing stuck in the outer tub

The only other spot will be the filter at the pump. check the filter for mold or mildew build up.

The odor that you are experiencing may be from the growth of mold. Inside the washer, some small pool of water may be left standing and is harboring mold spores. Even though you may operate the washer regularly, the mold spores are not being washed away. In our test machine, it consistently smelled of something like stale cigarette smoke, even though no clothes with cigarette smoke had been laundered.

We have a couple tips that might help to eliminate odor issues in your washing machine. First, and the most effective in our research, leave the lid or door to the washer open. By leaving the door open, it promotes air circulation and evaporation of standing water. The reduction in odor occurred quickly and dramatically.

Our second tip is to run the washer empty for a quick rinse cycle. Add an entire cup of bleach at the start of the cycle. The bleach is effective at destroying organisms, such as mold and bacteria. However, running it once will not be completely effective. I suggest pouring another cup of bleach into the wash tub, after the cycle has completed. This will leave bleach as the standing pool and should prevent the growth of mold or bacteria. However, if you do this, before doing a load of laundry you should run an empty rinse cycle again, to avoid damage to the clothes from the bleach left standing in the wash tub.

Please try my second solution, the bleach treatment will clear the mold.

    Thanks:)

Smelly clothes after washing

yes musty is actually cooked soap
from the dryer
take a clean just washed towel and put it in the washer alone with no soap
turn on the machine and watch what happens you will see the suds start to form
with this unit, if your using too much soap it will be spun into the cloths and then cooked in the dryer
do one towel load without soap then cut you soap usage way back
anything more than a tablespoon is way to much

remember you bought this unit to save water

1/6 the water 1/6 the soap
and he should be less

Moldy smelling clothes

First, clean your washer with one of the front load washer cleaners on the market. (Affresh, washer magic, smellywasher cleaner, whirlaway hot tub cleaner, or Tide front load washer cleaner) Use the longest, hottest cycle your washer has, with no clothes.
Second, rewash the smelly clothes with the heavy wash cycle and a second rinse option, using no soap or fabric softener. This will remove the soap and/or fabric softener build up in the clothes which is causing the smell. Third, begin using one to no more than two tablespoons of HE soap per load, and not more than 1 teaspoon full of fabric softener if you use it. This is because top load washers used up to 45 gallons of water per load, and your front load machine is only using about 12 gallons total. If you are washing a load of bath towels (which were only used to dry off your clean body, not wipe up the floor or something like that) they are not really dirty,...... for washing "clean" towels, don't use any soap, and of course never use fabric softener on towels.

Clothes have "dirty dishrag" smell after washing

If you open the door of your Neptune, you'll notice a small trough between the door gaskets (inner and outer) There is a drain at the bottom that can get blocked by lint and other funky stuff. Next time you do a load of towels, take a small dirty towel and wipe that area of your machine out real well. Secondly load a slightly smaller load in your machine. Be sure to use a HE compatible soap...less foaming- it does make a difference.. Also the swishy slushy sound is normal and there is liquid in the drum for balancing...it's normal.. I think with a clear door drain, a bit smaller load .you'll find it won't be smelly.. I've got one of these and the only time it gets ordoriforous is when I've jammed it to max capacity. Let me know if all this helps you out. k

Before going further it is important to determine if the machine is reaching full spin. Make sure the unit is set to MAX extract and watch the inner tub. The tub should be spin really fast (1000 rpm's or better) during the final spin. If not you have lost one of the phases on the motor.

Broken washer/dryer

This sounds like a motor control board is faulty. Please load a couple of towels in the machine run it. Watch the machine as it goes through its' cycles.

1. Do the towels tumble when the machine is washing ?
2. When it begins to spin, does it spin one way at a fast pace or does it spin one way and then the other ?

Answering these two questions will help in troubleshooting your problem.
