Question about Canon PowerShot A640 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Videos and photos not all readable by computer when taken on Canon PowerShot A640

If I take a video using the Canon PowerShot A640, then photos or another video, I can see them on the screen of the camera, but when I go to download them on the computer I get file errors viewing the memory card. Even the thumbnails do not give a preview for the photos made after the video nor for more than one video. When I try to view them, I cannot load an image nor the video - it does not recognise the format. If however I look at the disk using the camera, it works - does anyone have a solution for this or know how it is caused?

You will likely need to use the software that came with the Canon powershot vs. just trying to download via the default (scanner and camera wizard for example) program. If you are doing this already, then I don't know why it is not transferring them over to the computer properly, but if you are not using the Canon Zoombrowser software, you should make sure you load the cd that came with it.

Hope this helps!

Do you REALLY need the Canon software?

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

If you REALLY want the Canon stuff you may get some (though not all) of it from here.

If your photos and videos are stored on the memory card, then remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into an USB memory card reader. Connect this USB memory card reader and memory card into the USB port of your working computer. Make sure you use a program that recognizes videos.
iPhoto is for still photos. It does not recognize videos. Try iMovie instead.

Canon SD800 IS only lets me take 7 pictures and says memory card full. It just started doing this after I used the video camera function. Any recommendations?

well, from your statements i am able to understand that you used your camera to take videos first. if you have taken videos for a long time e.g more than 45 min, then the free space might have reduced. try copying all the files from the memory card to your computer and format it. change the settings of cam to photo mode and now try. generally a 1 gb memory card can accumulate a video file of about 1 hr only, if its taken in a HD format with high resolution.

Can't download photos from my canon a640 to my windows XP

You don't provide much info but I'm assuming you have installed the camera software on the computer, have attached the USB lead from the camera to the computer, made sure that the memory card is in the camera and THEN switched the camera on? If yes, then try checking for updates to the drivers/software from Canon's website for your model camera.

How do I down load video taken with my Canon SD100 to my computer - so I can free up the card memory?

Please see the following blog article, as it describes the use of an inexpensive card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos and videos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue:
