Your display is having problems with the Inverter driver. The board that provides hi-voltage to the lamp is not working. More details and tips about repairing this kind of issue here:

Bob, I would suggest doing the FLASHLIGHT TEST, But you already see the image on the DARK LCD Panel. You could possibly even watch a 8-12 minute video clip from youtube on LCD monitor disassembly and repair, but it would sure put a terrible strain on your eyes not having those 2 thin, horizontal cold-cathode-fluorescent-tubes emitting their nice bright, white light. If the displayed images on the unit were BRIGHT,SHARP,with good color definition then you might care to venture inside your monitor to make an inspection of the switch-mode-power-supply Electrolytic filter capacitors to make note if any of them exhibit swollenitius. Yes, Bob, you too can join the crowd of thousand's of users whoose tubes fail to light up anymore..due to poor quality far-east manufactured Electrolytic capacitors and or poor soldering of components to their respective circuit board. I won't provide you with any further info because you only described a symptom and no "WHAT SHALL I DO NEXT" question... I will leave you with some clues as to what to search for. www. badcaps.com, ccfldirect.com, also lots of stuff here on fixya, dell.com , www. lcdrepair.com , swollen caps, ....With a little knowledge, $20-$30 you could end up with a working monitor, or at least a spare "in the closet" unit if you go get a new one
to replace non working unit. Do what you want, guy. It's your dime. Bye for now. I'm louie12fix on fixya or lmistyrel @aol

I have a Dell monitor model #1901FP when my computer comes on the monitor comes on as it should. After only a few seconds the monitor goes blank. You can turn the monitor off then back on the monitor...

The solution I am about to describe refers to a backlight problem, which is most common in Dell 15,17 & 19" monitors. The symptoms are as you describe:
  • You power on the monitor, the green on/off switch illuminates and the display works for approx 1-2 seconds and then goes blank.
  • The green on/off switch stays illuminated but the screen remains blank
  • If you shine a torch into the LCD matrix you can see the display being rendered faintly
  • Switching the monitor off and then on again illuminates the display again for 1-2 seconds before going blank again
This is a backlight fault and is most likely to be caused by the failure of two of the four driver transistors used to light the lighting tubes in the LCD Matrix. This fault is easy to repair if you (or a friend) have a soldering iron and a voltmeter.

Inside the monitor there is an inverter board that acts as a power supply for the monitor and the logic necessary to control the backlights (illumination and brightness control). There are four lighting tubes, which are controlled by two lighting circuits (two lighting tubes per circuit). At the heart of the inverter board is a chip that monitors feedback from the two lighting circuits and closes the back-light circuit down if either of the lighting circuits fail, thus any component failure will exhibit the same symptoms.

The transistors which fail most often cost pence to replace (types C5706 or C5707). However, their failure in unlikely to be the cause of the problem. My first crack at fixing this fault, by replacing the transistors, resulted in them failing again within 24/48Hrs. The cause of the problem will be dry solder joints or loose connections on the high-voltage side of the circuit, usually on the backlight transformer in the effected circuit. If you re solder each of the connectors on the transformer you will save the transistors from blowing again - the transformer generates 1,400Volts for the lighting tubes and at this voltage, arcing across the a dry solder joint, will quickly destroy the transistors again.

No soldering iron? - A complete inverter board replacement is also reasonably cheap and easy repair. These are widely available.

Sorry of this is more detail than you expected but it may help others reading this article.

Screen goes blank when first turned on, have to keep restarting m

Hello,

If you turn the monitor off then about 1020 sec turn it back on and have a picture for five sec again it sound like the power supply in the monitor. but if that did not solve the problem, the picture board on your monitor is bad, since it goes off after few seconds and the power led or button is on, it means the picture board of your monitor has developed fault and will need to be replace.

I advice you replace the picture board on the screen of your monitor to solve the problem of the blank screen.

Take care.

My dell inspiron laptop 1000 screen turns dark every few seconds. if I close the computer half way and open it,it stay bright for a few seconds and turns dark again

This is your back light on your lcd display, To prove that have a flash light handy when it goes dark point the flash light at the screen and you should see the screen and that would mean right there you got a back light going out or the inverter that powers it is going bad. Etherway if this is not your area of work you need to tech it to a computer tech local to have it repaired.

Thanks for being considerate with your ratings and feedback today.

Pleasec look through my albums so you will know what to look for.

Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

Gateway Monitor goes blank after a few seconds after startup.

Sounds like the inverter is broken or have a short circuit. This is a common failure on TFT displays.

Here is a website explaining this kind of failure:

Dell Inspiron 1501

If the laptop keeps working, and you can use it on an external screen, then it is likely an hardware fault.

First perform a complete system recovery, like probably already instructed by the Dell support helpdesk. This will practically exclude the possibility of a driver or system problem.

If the problem is hardware , then you may have a faulty inverter board , a bad LCD display/LCD ribbon connection, or a faulty video adapter (integrated with motherboard).

If the problem is the inverter, then the screen will go dark, and the laptop will keep working on external display. This is probably your case.

If the problem is LCD display or ribbon cable, then the display will be blank with light on , and the laptop will keep working on external monitor.

Fault concerning video adapter usually cause the the system not to work at all, and it is uncommon under conditions described.

Screen Goes Blank

Ive seen this on other monitors. Look for a 1 and 2. Some monitors do NOT auto detect a signal, and this one might not. Look for a way to set the monitor from Digital input to VGA input. Try that and see.

Blank monitor

Luckily I'm not in it for the money so here's your answer. (Sorry drumbanger.)
When it goes black, look at your power button. Is it still green? If so, the backlight display is bad. If the power light has turned orange, you're most likely looking at a power/inverter problem. Sadly, if you don't have another monitor that you can swap parts out with, you're looking at a new monitor. But with the economy on the downslide, replacements keep getting cheaper!
