Question about Apple Mac Mini Desktop

1 Answer

Hi, I installed Onyx and it told me I should fix the disk, by inserting the OS X again, which I did. It installed ok until I put in the 2nd disk, which it ejected. After restart it gets stuck at the prompt for the 2nd disk to be inserted. I was able to get back on the net by going to software install. I called a mac expert, but he is an hours drive away. He said OS is corrupted and needs to be repaired. Is there anything else I could try?

SOURCE: reinstalling OS X software

Install a new OS. Insert OS X disc while holding down the "c" key on the keyboard. This should open the installer on the OS X disc. Do a "clean install". When the installation is finished and you are up and running, reinstall your other software. This should only take an hour or two depending on your computer. Now you have your own OS that is not cluttered up with another persons ****.

SOURCE: The dreaded question mark???

It sounds as if your hard drive is damaged and is not mounting. As you are running OS 9 I suggest using Norton Systemworks and run it's disc repair facility Disc Doctor. This will make repairs to the hard drive to allow it to mount. (Unless the disc is too badly damaged). If this is the case you will need to replace the hard drive and re-install all your system and applications. If you haven't backed up your info, the damaged disc can be scanned and your files saved by a computer repair shop.

Open system profiler and check to see if the drive is recognized on the ATA bus. If it is you can attempt to clean it using a cleaning disc designed for this purpose.
If the drive is not recognized, then you will need to take it to a reputable repairer or, get an external drive.

SOURCE: Computer freezes at grey screen

  1. Start from your Mac OS X Install disc: Insert the installation disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
  2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
  3. Click the First Aid tab.
  4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
  5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
  6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

Mac Repair Disk

Mac OS Repair

To run Disk Utility on apple macbook OS X 10.4.x, you must start the computer using an Apple Software Restore disc.

Insert the disc into the computer, restart.

After you hear the startup sound, press and hold the "C" key. Hold the key until you see the gray Apple logo.

Your computer will take longer to startup, be patient, this is completely normal. After the CD or DVD is loaded it will automatically start the OS installer, do not reinstall your OS system!

If you are requested to choose a language, just click the right arrow button (Next).

To open the Disk Utility Click on Utilities > Disk Utility.

Now the Disk Utility window should be open. Choose from the left side of the window the hard drive you wish to repair (in this case Macintosh HD).

Make sure that the First Aid tab is selected.

Click Repair Disk button (bottom right).

The tool will check your hard drive, if it encounters any problems it will list them in the middle of the window, otherwise you'll receive this message - "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK".

Once the scan is over if it found problems, click again on Repair Disk, this will try to repair the problems, if not successful you need a more advanced utility tool.

Hi, Went to the Mac store to upgrade to Snow Leopard and was told my OS was "way too Old to upgrade to Snow Leopard!" Sorry, I'm a numbskull when it comes to these things. Figured as long as...

Apple recommends that if you wish to go from 10.4 to 10.6 then you should purchase the 10.6 Box Set.

System Requirements to run Snow Leopard:
  • Mac computer with an Intel processor
  • 1GB of memory
  • 5GB of available disk space
  • DVD drive for installation
Snow Leopard Installation Instructions:
  1. Just insert the DVD in the optical drive.
  2. Restart your Mac while holding down the C key.
  3. You will be guided through the installation procedure and be prompted at one point to choose which install option you want.
  4. Once the Snow Leopard install is completed the Mac will restart itself.
  5. You will probably be asked to register with Apple upon restart.
  6. Enjoy Snow Leopard on your Mac!
Q: Can I upgrade directly from Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)?

A: Yes. Apple recommends purchasing the Mac Boxed Set for this purpose, which will also update iLife (it is unknown at the time of this writing whether older versions of iLife work with Snow Leopard) and iWork. Also note that while it has been said that the $29 upgrade will work with 10.4, it is not officially supported and may be in violation of the licensing terms.

Q: What happened to the different install options? Can't I do an Archive & Install?

A: Apple has revamped the familiar installation options for Mac OS X. You now have two choices, either a straight upgrade or a clean install. Supposedly if you choose to do a straight upgrade, what actually goes on behind the scenes is what was traditionally known as an Archive & Install.

Q: Is there anything I can do to better prepare myself for the upgrade?

A: Yes. It is advisable to run a Verify/Repair Permissions and Verify/Repair Disk in Disk Utility. You may also want to run the maintenance tasks in Onyx. And finally, it would be wise to get your applications up to date using a program like AppFresh.

This is a pretty unusual problem but it should be easy enough to fix. If you're getting the login screen after logging in and it keeps doing the same thing without any prompt from you, there's a problem with the login kernel of the OS itself.

I'd recommend booting to the install DVD (Mac OS X Install DVD) - do this by inserting it and restarting by holding down the 'C' key until you see the Apple logo and spinning gear.

After choosing your language, on the next screen go to the Utilities menu in the upper left, choose Disk Utility, choose 'Mac HD' on the left and click 'Repair Disk.' There will also be 'Repair Disk Permission,' IGNORE IT.

Ostensibly it should find and repair the problem. To restart, go to Mac OS X Installer > Quit Mac OS X Installer and choose restart.

If the problem persists, boot to the install DVD again and reinstall - it will not mess with any of your documents, movies, music, or other personal documents. Basically just keep hitting next/agree/continue until it says it is installing, which will take 30-45 minutes.

Good luck!

Either you DVD is corrupt, OR the DVD reader is not working correctly. It seems the reason the restore failed, is that it "Thinks" the Hard Drive is corrupt, too corrupt to replace the OS on...
The only thing to try now, is to get a Windows install DVD, put DVD in drive and boot from the DVD, then try to install with that, when you get to installing and it asks if you want to Format, do so, format Full NTFS. Then try to proceed to installing. If this too fails then you will need to replace your hard Drive, quite a simple matter.

Slaving my hard disk

hmm..
it's hard to put it on words, but ill try my best.

1st Inserting and removing the IDE cables and power cables :
- 1st of all you should know how to insert the IDE cables and power cables, but before you remove the cables and put it back again, try to observe the color of the cables, the Red color of power cable is parallel to the red color of IDE cable. so when you insert it again, you put it on the same way, the Red color of each cable must be parallel.

2nd putting the jumper:
- try to check the printings on you hard disk at the bottom, and see if there's any tutorials on how to put the jumper.

3rd access the BIOS:
- to access the BIOS, click Del. Hence, before you modify any settings there, MAKE SURE to remember those settings that you modify, so that when there's a trouble you can put it back to it's default setting. Ok let's continue, if your BIOS has an auto-detect it will directly detect the Hard Disk drive that's being installed, if not you will manually detect it on the different Hard Disk setting. After modifying save and exit setting and reboot your PC.

i hope this helps you.
