Question about Computers & Internet

3 Answers

I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 hard drive that quit working. When we turned the computer on it said: Boot disk failure. Please insert system disk and press enter. At some point I got to the diagnostic screen where it performs a check of the computer. It came back saying there was an error with the boot path. Error code was BIOHD-2, no drives detected. How can I fix this without loosing my data?

Hi Levi08. By now you probably already have 1) resolved or 2) tossed the offending Seagate, but maybe this will help others out there with 500GB - 1.5TB Barracuda 7200.11 drives that may be experiencing this problem now.

Check out this Seagate forum: http://stx.lithium.com/t5/ATA-and-Serial-ATA-drives/Barracuda-7002-11-not-detected-in-Bios-or-Windows/m-p/45355

CNET discusses the firmware issue in more detail here: http://news.cnet.com/seagate-fixes-7200.11-drives-except-when-it-doesnt/

In a nutshell, most failures where the 7200.11 can't even be read by the BIOS suddenly is a flaw in the original firmware. Because of the range of HDDs this affects, Seagate has allows end-users to have access to the firmware and it is reported that Seagate will perform data recover of any drives that crashed with the faulty firmware.

Not sure what operating system you are using. If it is an actual hardware problem you will find it extremely hard to recover these files. If the system still recognizes the hard drive? you may be ok. Insert the Windows disk and boot from it. The system will boot, you will see "Windows Setup" then you will notice it loading files. Be patient here. When you get to the screen that says at the top "Windows Setup" choose r for recovery console. Then it will examine your disk configuration. When that is complete it will ask you to logon, then you will see the command prompt. Type this: fixmbr then once this is complete, try rebooting your computer and voila (hopefully)

Hope this helps

Hard disk very slow and restart.

Seagate is known for hard drive failures. The S.M.A.R.T. feature may warn you that the drive is failing. This is not uncommon and is most likely the case of why it is going slow now. You should contact seagate ASAP to see if they can give you a replacement.

More than likely, since you say you did a DOS install of the OS, you did not set the FDISK parameters to set your primary drive. Insert the DOS CD you used to format the system. Boot to a DOS prompt and run the FDISK command. It should have an option, I believe it is number 2 or 3 to "Set primary drive". Select your hard disk 0 as this drive and you should be fine at rhat point.

Seagate 160GB SATA Hard Drive Installation.

Hi, Was the original 20Gb HD also a SATA or was it installed as an IDE? Try installing a fresh clean Windows rather than the restore disc. However, you will need the drivers for the SATA 160Gb and press F6 when Windows installers ask you to. Post back how things turn up or should you need further information. Hope this be of some idea/help. Good luck and kind regards.
