Question about JVC AV-48WP30 48" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Convergence I'm unable to make any convergence adjustments.  I no longer have the manual so I was happy to find one here; however, on page 50 that has the instructions, the graphic showing which keys to use to make the verticle/horizontal adjustments is missing. Can you help me figure this out?  Thanks.

No, I have not made any repairs. I had this problem once before and a panel needed replacing. Once done, the technician, adjusted the convergence using the +, on the convergence menu. I was hoping to make similar adjustments without an expensive repair call. I did not expect to have to shell out $400 every 2-3 years to solve this problem. This seems to be a common problem. I understand the repair involves soldering, etc....something I'm not comfortable with.

I have a JVC 48 inch rear projection tv (model # AV48WP74) and all of the colors have separated. There is also a bow in the picture at the top left and bottom left. I can't correct it using the remote. From what I have read, it seemed like the convergence has gone bad. After figuring this out, a local repair shop said it was the convergence and the bow represented a bad power supply as well.

Would it be possible to buy the whole board with the heat sinks and replace it? Does the board plug in or does it need to be soldered? Would there be anything else I would need to replace? If the tv turns on and there is a picture (although colors are messed up), would the power supply be bad too?

The repair shop wanted $400 for the repair. The t.v. is 5 years old...and the cost seems too much!

    Thank you!!

If a convergence issue exists, alignment is secondary to the did not indicate if you already repaired problem
and are now doing final re-alignment.....T.

Sorry to hear you have a common problem re-occurance....

FYI....Basic reason for short-term failure of IC's is use of poor quality generics by well-meaning repairmen trying to hold down

the estimate to the customer....My approach is to offer upgrades

if available then first quality originals and NEVER use seconds..

Your part # is STK392-110.....can be upgraded to STK394-160E. Sanyo with Hitachi name = Part # CZ 01341..........

    2) The complete circuit board can be replaced..last two or three years because it is the same or less quality as original.......

PS The power supply referred to is replacement of usually one

resistor ....cost < $1.00......No big deal........good tv ...sorry to

hear you are giving it up...................T.

I am unable to adjust the red color in the convergence adjustment on my IQC50H94W 2000 Zenith 50". From everything I read I believe I need to replace my Convergence IC Chips, however I am not 100%...

Your convergence has failed and needs to be repaired. Once quick test is to goto your convergence menu and see if you can adjust red and blue. If not its has failed and needs to be fixed. You can call in a repair shop or you can get the parts and instructions from and do the repair yourself. Its a fairly easy DIY fix.

Cannot get the set to focus. Colors are blured

Sounds like a convergence misalignment, go into the tv menu and look for other adjustments sub menu and follow the on screen directions, this is a simple procedure but will take a little time to get it adjusted just right. Directions are also on pages 20 and 21 in your owners manual. Good luck!

Convergence Issue on Toshiba TN50X81 - Service Manual & Parts Source?

Replace the convergence IC's - P/N STK192-110 with part STK192-150 or 180. Then you can go back in and make the detailed convergence settings and get your picture back in alignement. Also check the flame-resistant resistors around the ICs to make sure that none of them have opened up.

Your TV has a convergence problem. Here are some of the most common symptoms.

Screen looks 3D
One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
Screen is bowed in but stationary.
Here is a quick test....
Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence or magic focus section
Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.
You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.
If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.
You can get a repair kit that includes all the parts from
They have put together a kit for the Hitachi TV sets.
The kit includes a photo instruction guide, original Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, etc.
Everything you need to fix it yourself. Its a fairly easy fix on the Hitachi sets.

HDTV Convergence problems

Does the convergence change, do you have the auto or manual. Look for the manual and try to adjust yourself if not then there is some resistors bad on your convergence board.

Convergence Problems

If you did not use heat sink compound then you probably have not hurt the new IC's yet but you should remove them and add the heat sink compound NOW. If the convergence IC's are bad then you will have access to the convergence menu but the adjustments will have no effect. The fact that you switched the IC's and got the same results shows that the IC's are good. If your red convergence is still way out when the new IC's are installed then the old IC probably burned out the low value resistor associated with the Red Vertical (RV) channel.
