Question about Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra MP3 Player

1 Answer

I have a Nomad Zen Xtra that has worked very well on 2 separate Vista computers since 2007. The firmware is version 2.10.03. I have purchased what may be the last available new Zen Xtra that could be identified by Google search. This new device has firmware 1.03.02 factory installed. Vista cannot see it although the 2007 Xtra works well with Vista. As best I can tell Creative no longer supports this device and the previous explicit directions I found that there are no longer available. I do have all of the Creative *.exe files that I used with a the device that I began using in 2007. This includes ZenXtraP4SAudible_PCWF_LB_2_19_03.exe. I recall problems with Windows Media Player version 11 and instructions that it must be uninstalled which is a task that may not be accomplished without major consequences. I would guess that all I need to do is replace the firmware but I thought it was more than just double clicking the file. I need both Zen Xtras to work on the same computers. Driver Robot purports to solve this for $30 plus. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Yes you have to update firmware of it.
To install this firmware update
1. Download the ZenXtraP4SAudible_PCFW_LB_2_10_03.exe file into your local hard disk.
2. Connect your player to your computer.
3. Double-click the firmware update file and follow the instructions on the screen.
While updating your player's firmware, you may be informed that an application is preventing the firmware update. Should this occur,
Start Creative MediaSource.
On the menu bar, click Tools -> Settings.
Click the Detector tab.
Click the Enable Detector checkbox to uncheck it.
Restart your computer.
Try updating the firmware again.

Let me know if you need more assistanse.
Thanks.

When it the zen is turned on it says firmware

Had the same problem and nearly went nuts trying to fix it. Here's what I did:

1. Uninstall all creative driver & creative software.
2. Uninstalled Windows Media Player 11 (Rolled back to WMP 10) and restarted PC.
3. Uninstalled Windows Media Player 11 Runtime and restarted PC.
4. Downloaded and Installed the latest free version of Winamp from http://www.winamp.com
5. Connected my A/C Power Cord to my Nomad Jukebox then connected my Nomad Jukebox via USB cable to the Computer.

The computer should then recognize the Nomad Jukebox as "Found New Hardware" then "MTP Device" and lastly "Your new hardware is installed and ready to use.

6. If you haven't already, go to the creative website and download the Creative Zen Xtra PlaysForSure Firmware 2.10.03 and save it to your computer.
7. Run the Firmware (Make sure Nomad Jukebox is connected) and at this point the Computer should recognize the Nomad Jukebox and begin the upgrade.

After your upgrade is complete, You can go ahead and re-download Windows Media Player 11 and it will recognize the Nomad Jukebox. Not sure what version of windows you have, but I have two computers, one with windows xp and the other has windows 7 and Im able to transfer music perfectly fine with Windows Media Player and RealPlayer on both computers. I hope this works for you. Good Luck!

HElp!!!!

After three months of trying and trying in many computers, following many, many procedures found all over the Internet, my Creative Nomad has accepted the firmware and has borned again.
What I did?
1. Connected the Nomad on a computer with Windows XP and Windows Media Player 9, that never has been touched by a creaive device.
It recognizes the device but can´t find any update to the drivers,
2. Updated Windows Media Player 9 to Windows Media Player 10,
3. Restart the computer
4. Connect the Nomad and the computer recognizes the device and autamtically search and found updated MPT drivers.
5. Run the firmware update program "ZenXtraP4SAudible_PCFW_LB_2_10_03 (Creative Zen Xtra PlaysForSure Firmware 2.10.03)"
6. Finally the magic button always has been disabled was enabled so start reloading firmware.
And now the Nomad is working in windows vista.

The difference between the computer where the firmware works and the others is that this has never had media player 10 or 11 and never has installed creative drivers.
Hope this can be useful to smoeone, somewhere, sometime.....

Ever since vista dropped alot of support files for simple thing like Creative's older model Mp3 Players, try going to creatives website, and look in the support section for a driver update for VIsta.

Updated Drivers

You need to go to Creative USA Support and download

Creative Zen Xtra PlaysForSure Firmware 2.10.03. This firmware upgrade has to be done on an XP computer but if you follow the directions, Vista will then allow the installation of the Creative Organizer software which will then allow you to backup the files of the Zen and transfer them to the Zune. I just did this yesterday for my brother-in-law, though I did it all on XP and haven't tried to finish the install on Vista.

Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Extra firmware problems on Windows Vista

Find an XP computer with WIndows Media 10 only nothing higher. If you can't find a computer like that uninstall any WMP newer than WMP 10 and then reinstall WMP 10. There is a bug in WMP 11 and its just best to avoid this until you have upgraded your firmaware to 2.x. If you don't have the newer firmware 2.x download it. Now click on the firmware  program then on your Zen Xtra select Load OS when prompt to connect the USB cable going to your computer. It should see your Zen now and should pop up that stupid window that you need to scroll at the bottom and click agree to get rid of then your Zen should reboot a few times don't touch it!! It will tell you when its done. If you can't get it to see your Zen try plugging and unplugging the USB cable. The best way is to do a fresh install of Window XP SP1 and install noting but WMP 10. You also can d/l the 1.x firmware then load it then load firmware 2.x then just agree with everything and it should work. I have upgraded and updated 6 of these Zen Xtras. Anyone that want a 120G Zen Xtra I am on Ebay: cheap-xbox-drives
I also can do upgrades to your existing Zen Xtras Players.
