If you have spark and compression it must not be getting fuel.
Put a little mix directly into the carburetor and try to start it. If it pops and doesn't continue to run look at your fuel lines. I think you have a cracked hose. HTH

I have a poulon pro 42cc saw that wont start. dont think its getting gas cuz i tried to flood it with the primer but no gas on the spark plug.

The primer will not flood it, all the primer does on these saws is pushes fuel through the carb. If this is a new saw, it needs a carb adjustment, a very common problem on poulan products these days. It's covered by the warranty at any of their service dealers (you can locate one on poulan's website).
How old is the gas you are using? If the mixture is more than 30 days old, make a new mix and try again.
Check for spark. Pull the boot off of the plug. Hold the boot near something metal and pull the starter. If you see a spark, you are good. If you don't, you may have a problem with the coil.

Stopped running after 20 min., repeatedly tried to restart. Have not been able to start it since

This could be caused by several things but most likely it is a cracked fuel line. The lines of these get brittle and break from vibration over time. First I would make sure I have spark by pulling the spark plug and put the plug boot back on the spark plug. Then with you foot holding the saw firmly in place, ground the spark plug on the metal portion of the engine block away from the spark plug hole. Pull the cord and see if the spark plug is firing across the tip. If so, I would look very closely for a broken fuel line.

I hope this helps you isolate the problem.
