The beep comes from the receiver in the fan hub. If no beep, I would suspect the receiver is not responding to the remote.
Reasons could be:
- loose connections to/from receiver or,
- with bad luck, the receiver could have failed already (loose conections could cause premature receiver failure) or,
- the fan pull-chain switch is off -- your scenario does not allow for the chain being pulled during the 5 hours the fan was not run, but who knows... or,
- receiver/remote are out of synch (set on different frequencies). Are there dip switches in receiver/remote to set frequency, or is the frequency set by the remote with a combination of button pushing? If the latter, maybe the frequencies for the two are were accidentally set out of synch...
More info, let me know...

- Coupla more thoughts:
Does the fan also have a wall switch (which would normally be on -- not used except for emergencies) -- has it been accidentally turned off?
Next, have you confirmed that the circuit breaker for this circuit is on and functioning normally? For example, is there something else on this circuit which you could check to make sure it is powered?

- Does the remote have an LED on it which is supposed to light when the remote button is pushed? If so, is this light working?

- Okay. If I understand correctly, there is an led on the remote and it is not lighting -- correct? If so, check the battery & battery contacts in the remote -- ensure all are clean and tight, and, of course, check that batteries are good. The remote batteries could have drained down in the five hours if there is a fault in the remote.
Please let me know if you find anything significant.

- Is there any way you can get your hands on an identical remote to see if that works, e.g.., do you have another one of these fans somewhere else in the house?
If another remote operates the fan then the current remote is faulty. If another remote does not operate the fan, then the problem is up at the ceiling: faulty wiring or a faulty receiver.
