The mouse works, but the keyboard doesn't. I cannot type anything.

Simple way to confirm if it is actually a laptop keyboard failure. Plug in a USB desktop keyboard and let the drivers load. If the USB keyboard works then you have confirmed the laptop keyboard failure. Either that you can go to "start"- "all programs"-"accessories"-"ease of access" then choose "on screen keyboard". You are using Win7 I presume?

My toshiba laptop is typing wrong characters but my wireless tevion keyboard is o k. Is there a solution to this ?

Sounds like the laptop keyboard went bad and thats why its typing wrong characters. Best way to verify this is to use a USB keyboard on the laptop, if the USB keyboard is typing the correct keys then you know the laptop keyboard is bad. If the USB keyboard is typing the wrong keys as well then you know its a setting in windows that is causing the keys to type wrong characters.

Trouble when typing on the keyboard on my sony vaio

The reason this is happening is that as you are typing; you're resting some weight on the thin plastic above the touchpad...which then makes contact and registers a 'click'; thus moving your cursor around.  Or you're brushing your thumb against it when hitting the space key.

Some laptops are more susceptible to this than others.  Some more modern laptops come with a button to turn the touchpad off to solve this very problem.

The only thing you can do about this is to disable the touchpad through the touchpad driver (down by the clock, usually) and use a mouse instead.  Depending on how you use your laptop, this will be more or less inconvenient- if your laptop never leaves the desk; disable the touchpad and use a problem.  If you go mobile a lot, you'll have to enable and disable the touchpad all the time.

The other thing you can do is adapt your typing style so you don't put any weight on anything but the key you're pressing.  This is quite difficult and uncomfortable, and is not recommended for long sessions.

Keys grouping on keyboard

Sorry to have to tell you but it does look like you did maim and injure your keyboard.

BUT all is not lost

If you are willing to put some time and effort into it and feel comfortable pulling things apart but more important being able to put it back together again then you could remove the keyboard strip it down do a proper clean and re-assemble

Hmm not happy at the prospect ?

Ok plug a cheap USB or PS2 (check what you need) keyboard in and that will get you going again for the moment.

Bit Happier I hope ?
But wait there is more

Ebay is a prime source of laptop parts at great prices and the good news is that laptop keyboards are not as expensive as many might think !
They are for the most part easy to replace too !

You didn't tell us what model your lappy is so I could find a site to send you for the destructions (oops) but I am sure you can work google and maybe type "mymodlelaptop replace keyboard"

My keyboard won't type compaq ME

The keyboard is definitely bad if you can't use it but with it typing stuff on its own, its shorting out it sounds like, replace the keyboard when you get the chance.

Keyboard will not accept characters. Goes thunk.

Try using an external keyboard in order to get the machine up and running. Then do a system restore to a point where you know the keyboard was functioning correctly. If that doesn't work then try uninstalling the keyboard drivers and do a hardware search. It will automatically pick up the keyboard and reinstall the drivers. If it still doesn't work, then the keyboard needs replacing.

Keyboard won't respond

It is odd that it will type before you log in, but not after.

If you have access to a USB desktop keyboard try using that to see if it works after windows has been logged in.

I'd also check the Device Manager. You can get their by clicking on the start button, then click run. After the box pops up type "devmgmt.msc" into it. This will pop up a box that shows you all the devices in your computer. When this is open find the keyboard section and click on the ' + ' . After the keyboard section is expanded look to see if anything under their has a red ' x ' or a yellow exclamation point through it. If it has one of these symbols, double click on it and try to enable the device. Let me know if this doesn't do anything, there may be 1 or 2 more things to try.

Acer aspire 5100 keyboard does not type characters

There is a small ribbon cable that connects the keyboard to the motherboard inside. It is very likely that the ribbon cable has become loose enough to no longer make contact. If you send me the model of your computer, I could probably find you a diagram of pictures to guide you through taking the keyboard out of your laptop to re-seat the cable.
