Convergence problem - Panasonic PT-51HX41E

Firs't off all here are the manuals for this model:
USER MANUAL:
http://www.devicemanuals.com/guide/Television/Panasonic/Panasonic-PT51HX41E-51-PROJECTION-TV-TkRJMk53PT.html

SERVICE MANUAL:
http://schematicsforum.com/schematics//TV/Panasonic/PT-51HX41ENASVC.zip

My TV started this convergence problem, i came here, found some helpful posts and tried to fix it myself.

BEFORE I CHANGE ANY PARTS

When i went to the "Setup" menu and try to adjust the convergence ('convergence 2' menu - page 21 of user manual), i couldn't get those red crosses to align with the white ones.

WHAT I CHANGED

Following the instructions i found on this fourm, i changed the two STK392-110 (ref # IC7001 and IC7002).

Somebody else told me i had to change the resistors R7048, R7049, R7050, R7053, R7056, R7059 (2,2 Ohms x 2 wats) so i did. These resistors are not on the replacement part list of the manual but their values are available on the scematics (A-Board).

WHAT I GOT

After i put everything back on place i turned the TV on, went to the same 'convergence 2' menu (user manual page 21) and I was able to align the crosses.

THE BIG PROBLEM IS the lines are not straight. I'm not sure how to explain it but the 2 lines that make the cross are a little bit curved, rounded, waving, something like that.

So, i can get the center of the two crosses on top of each other (before the new STK's i couldn't) but the lines wont align because they are not straigh lines, I end up with a picture that looks like this one:

http://www.fixya.com/uploads/images/701CB04.jpg

(the above picture is not from my tv but one i found online with the same problem)

I went to the service menu and got something like the picture bellow but a lot worse:

http://www.dioldesign.com/imon/Ser_area.jpg

I follow the instructions from page 22 to 23 of the service manual (Fine Adjustment Mode - FINE - Convergence) but didn't get luck. The lines are too curved.

So, is there a way i can reset all changes i made on the service menu to factory default?
And is there anything else i can do fix it?

I hope somebody can help me with that.

Thanks in advance.

    Hi SD Tech;

I was out for a few days and when i came back i found your post, however, i can't find a way to add a comment directly to it as i did with the solution posted by raklein62.

How does it work? Does my time to accept a solution expires?

Anyways, i meesed up really bad, the solder of one of the resistors was broken. After i fix the solder it's much, much better.

    What's happening now:

I still have a little of that "ghost effect" with the green.

When i go to CONVERGENCE 1, i can't get that green cross right (page 20 - user manual).

The horizontal line is bellow the reference mark and also about one inch from the left side. The horizontal line is also out from the mark, more to the right side.

I use the navigation buttons but doesn't looks like it's moving.

When i enter the service menu, those grids are also a lot better than before but still a little bit of waves.

    Hey raklein62;

Just today i noticed that the HD channels (1080) are 100% perfect, the problem is just with the standard definition channels.

Do you think that matters? Should i still proceed with the ajusts you sugested?

First of all, thank you for your attention.
I'll check it out and let you know the results.

First----you are telling me in service menu set adjusts but lines are not straight----did you at any time during adjustments adjust the Green?

I have done hundreds of these sets--the Green determines in the tech menu if the grid is perfectly straight---if you go there and it is not--cover the lens for the red and blue and look at the green grid--if it is not straight what you have to do is carefully adjust green to get all the lines as straight as you can and then you have to adjust the red and then the blue to the green---any adjustments you made and saved before cannot be changed--it is helpful in this situation that once you get the green grid straight--cover the blue lens so all you see is red and green--do the same with blue, cover the red lens and adjust the blue.

If the green grid is not straight it means something happened when the set failed that affected the sets memory of the convergence adjustments---I NEVER REPLACE ALL THE RESISTORS-ONLY THE ONES THAT ARE BAD NEED TO BE REPLACED

Give me as much information as you can----from what I have seen on this site I KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS TYPE OF SET THAN A LOT OF OTHERS HERE---those kits are a joke---usually only one or two resistors need to be replaced.

Also--on some of these Panasonic sets the set needs to be adjusted first in the 4/3 which adjusts it also in the full(they call it something else) Then in zoom and wide zoom if it has them and last in the HD mode with the set hooked up to a hd signal .

Get back to me and I will try to help you resolve this problem.

REGARDS, SD TECH

To look into this problem can't be done in a couple of minutes or hours. I'll need some time to think of what is actually happening and what you did. Might of used a varible resistor to fine tune. Give me time to add it all up. Take at least a day or two plus no or little pay so hold on if you would. What a mess. lot of info to gather.

Do the voltage for IC7001 and IC7002 match up with the values on pg 61? What was the value of the resistors for R7048, R7049, ect, before you replaced with 2.2 ohm resistors? The way it floats makes me think something isn't grounded good enough or right.

    Richard Klein Sep 25, 2009

The resistors that you replaced should have two volts applied on them. Is this correct? Is that what you are measuring?

    What happens in the Panasonic

set is that the convergence IC’s will short and cause the power supply to shut down
from the overload of current. Along with the convergence IC’s there will also
be some associated components that will need to be replaced as well. There are
some resistors that are part of the convergence circuit that will be open and
need to be replaced. Most likely these will appear charred in the center. If
you have an Ohm Meter or a DVM, check all the resistors that are close to the
IC’s and you should be looking for either ones that have opened or have changed
    values.

There are also two resistors on the front of the board located in the middle
that are fusible link resistors, these should be checked for opens and replaced
    if they are found so.

Go back and follow pages before 21. A Tech would have started at the beginning, and made measurements to compared them what they should be. Real fast way to troubleshoot. I really don't see any measurements (espeacially for board D & A) on your posting. I think your green lamp isn't properly seated right or, or focus lenght is off, and procedures in dynamic and magnetic adjustments before pg 21, not followed.

If you make it up to this point you might have to listen to SD's comment on these kits. I'd really like to see procedures checked off, and then measurements when a procedure couldn't be checked off.

How did the Horizontal Phase Adjustment (H-POS) come out on pg 19? Did you have good results with Electric & VM Focus Adjustment, Complete adjustment?

  • Richard Klein
    Richard Klein Oct 07, 2009

I'm sure the Centering Magnets Adjustment pg 19 will solve your problem. Please be careful and write down information.

The waveyness will be Symmetrical shape once the magnetic adjustment is made and the convergence procedure is re-done again.

    Richard Klein Oct 08, 2009

Yes, your 100% on the right path. Just do the centering magnets adjustment all the way to the convergence adjustment. The other adjustments before centering magnets, I thought may be needed because of possible movement during repairs. But, this is good news! HD channels uses the digital convergences which after adjustments you'll be enabling.

I have a panasonic PT-51HX41E 52" projection tv

A tech might be able to get into the hidden tech menu---sub brightness and sub contrast settings are there and it is not real easy to get into and does vary from model to model---access is with the original remote.

A suggestion if you can not or do not want to pay would be to search with Google and the model number for a "Service Manual" which will in it have instructions and indicate how, it will also have a list of items in that menu---be careful what you adjust there.

you can look up all the different codes in the remote manual. if you do not have that look up the codes for the brand of remote online or turn on the set and put the remote in the aearch mode and you might be able to find it that way. kind of dificult to tell you without the brand of remote you have!

Check the power light for blink code--usually if this model shuts down the power light will blink in a sequence--3 blinks a pause and 3 blinks is short protection--usually means a convergence circuit problem.

Let me know what you find--I am here to help.

if this helped you rate this solution as I do this here for free.

This is a convergence output IC problem. convergence board (main Board) would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually charge between $200-$300

PANASONIC PT-51HX41E

The convergence amps have most likely failed. That unit takes two STK392-110 (Sanyo) amps. For more reliability I'd have them changed using an STK392-150. They have a greater amperage and higher heat tolerance.
It's clearly a job that you want a qualified shop to do.. Call around and get some off-the-cuff estimates on what they charge to change out the convergence amps and tell them that you would prefer they use the 150's instead of the 110's.. They'll probably wonder how qualified you are. :)

I found this on the net let me know if this works for you Once you are in service moce on a Panasonic you must continue through all steps to the end to exit. It starts with the B parameters, then C, S, and M, then you can exit by pressing power and action ON THR RECIEVER for 2 seconds. The TV will turn off and come back on on ch3 with sound. BTW, you advance thru the menus by pressing power on the remote.
