Question about Dishwashers
We have a 7 year old dishwasher which suddenly has stopped spraying the water around. The pump still works, at least it empties the water at the points in the wash cycle where it should, and I can still here noise during the cycles where it should be forcing water into the spray arm, but nothing gets sprayed.
1. What exactly is broken?
2. Is this something that will require an experienced repairman? I'm fairly handy, but need complete instructions in order to effect repairs myself.
3. Considering the dishwasher's age, is it worth repairing?
4. If it is time to get a new dishwasher, we have acidic well water, so we need a dishwasher which has a seal that will hold up to it, like the Maytag (we had a Sears Kenmore that only lasted 2 years before it's seal went). What are my brand choices with that in mind?
A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

SOURCE: re: Maytag dishwasher
does the timer advance the control knob? check to see that nothing is in the way of the center spray tower. does it sound like any water is spraying around inside?

If the washer is not used regularly the shaft can stick to the seals and prevent the motor from spinning. This happens quite regularly for me if I don't use the washer often. You can just take off the bottom panel - after shutting off power to the dishwasher - and access the motor. you should see some fins and then just try to spin the motor by hand. It usually takes about 90 degrees of rotation before the motor breaks free from the seal. You'll have to fight through the spring-like resistance created by the seal-shaft adhesion. After it breaks free the motor spins freely and you should be all set to go. I haven't found a more permanent fix for this other than running the dishwasher more regularly.

On the LG LDF xxxx dishwasher family, the Vario feature uses a motor/check valve to switch between "full power" cleaning from _either_ the lower or the upper spray arms, never at the same time. So, not seeing the upper arm spin during the lower arm spinning is standard operating procedure.
But back to your problem. Step one would be to remove the filter assembly again and make certain that there is nothing (debris, broken glass) blocking the white areas where the check valve rotates to switch between upper/lower spray arms. A blockage there ~could~ cause impotent spraying/cleaning.
If there is no blockage and the impeller remains in good shape, suspect a failing wash pump motor. Try to isolate the noise to that motor.
Watch for error codes on the display and report back what you find, OK?

remove the kick panel below the door, place a pan, etc under where the drain hose connects to the drain extension tube, and slide the clamp back some so you can slide the hose off of the extension tube (white plastic tube) and drain any excess fluid into the aforementioned pan, etc., then unscrew the extension tube and check for plugs, or restrictions.
the sump may also be pluged beneath the strainer assembly, and that requires removing the lower spray arm, the water tube that runs up the inside back of the unit, and the upper parts of the assembly below them to access the drain/pump sump area.
last but not least the impeller is jamed and might be able to be freed by removing whatever has lodged within there..
ya never know...
best of luck,
