Yesterday I buy a Samsung Laptop model R538 but with Linux Julia preinstaled. I want to change the OS with Win XP. I begin the instalation and at the point in which I know he want to format the disk I get...

Solution:
1. Boot into Linux.
2. Use "fdisk" command to delete "ext" partitions. // In fact, no need to use other tools (e.g. killdisk)
3. Run "fdisk" command as root.
4. For those who don't know how to use "fdisk", I provide an example here. (Read the man page of "fdisk" will be better)

//Remember !!! fdisk can format your hard disk (which will erase all your data), use it with great care -- unless you know what you are doing, otherwise don't use it. (I will not take any responsibility of my suggestion)

i) fdisk /dev/sda
.) For those who use PATA (Parallel IDE) : fdisk /dev/hda
.) For those who use second hard disk : fdisk /dev/sdb (2nd SATA hard disk), fdisk /dev/hdb (2nd PATA hard disk), fdisk /dev/sdc (3rd SATA hard disk) and so on ... {sd [a, b, c, d, ...]}
.) fdisk "what" depends on where your linux partition is.
ii) use "m" to read the available options
iii) press "d"
iv) press the number of the partition you want to delete
v) Remember ! if you don't want to make the change, press "q" at any time. (that means quit without saving)
vi) If you want to make the change, press "w" (that means write the change to hard disk)
5. There may sometimes cause a warning message say something about not synchronize the disk (because you cannot make changes while you are using the partition -- if you are booting the partition now), the change will occur after you shutdown and reboot the system.
6. Okay, you can reboot the system now and you will find that the partition is empty now.
7. You can install XP or what ever now.

** For those who cannot use "fdisk", my simplest suggestion is to re-install Linux if you don't have any other tools (such as killdisk). And then you should be able to use "fdisk". In fedora 8, you can even choose formatting the hard disk in "vfat" file system (which can be recognized by almost all computer include windows xp and so on -- see "File Allocation Table" wiki) during installation. Therefore, no need to run fdisk

I have Intel 810e PIII 1 GHz 512 Mb Ram 20 GB HDD. OS Win ME I want to add secondary HDD. Which one should I preferr 80GB / 120GB / 160GB. and will install new OS say Win XP or linux in Secondary Hdd....

160gb - but ensure the bios is up to date and check the motherboard manual as that will or should explain about maximum capacity of hard drives but am sure it should be fine.

If it is not and does not detect all of it you can partition the partitions into smaller amounts ie 80 gb partitions each ?

Re-format laptop hard drive

Hi, If you REALLY need to FORMAT your Hard Drive, that is...SCOUR out ALL THE DATA on it, then get a CD disk with Win 98 FDISK on it. It can be downloaded by a friend who can BURN it for you. Go into STARTUP by hitting appropriate "F" key, (experiment here...), then tell the BIOS to start up in CD drive..
Save setting, restart, at the C:>: prompt, type "FORMAT C:", & telll it to go... Hang onto your hat, your Hard Drive is being SCOURED CLEAN & prepared for new data to be installed... Dugal

I`m unable to install windows 98 in seagate 80 gb ide barracuda hdd

For W98, if you create the bootdisk from within windows, you will need to go here to download the newest version of FDISK.EXE then copy it to the bootdisk, allowing it to overwrite the older version. This way you will have support for larger harddrives.

FDISK LIMITATION WITH 64GB DRIVES:
Why does FDISK not recognize my disk (or RAID array) which is larger than 64GB?

There is a bug in Microsoft's FDISK under Windows 95B, 98 and 98SE that can be corrected by downloading a newer version. See Knowledge Base Article Q263044 for more information.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q263044

When you use Fdisk.exe to partition a hard disk that is larger than 64 GB (64 gigabytes, or 68,719,476,736 bytes) in size, Fdisk does not report the correct size of the hard disk.

The size that Fdisk reports is the full size of the hard disk minus 64 GB. For example, if the physical drive is 70.3 GB (75,484,122,112 bytes) in size, Fdisk reports the drive as being 6.3 GB (6,764,579,840 bytes) in size.

NOTE: This hotfix is not designed for 48-bit logical block addressing (LBA) hard disks, and it is not supported on hard disks larger than 137 GB. However, even if the drive is physically larger than 137 GB, if you create partitions smaller than 137 GB, this FDISK.EXE version will work correctly. (THE FORMAT COMMAND WILL SHOW THE DRIVE AMOUNT IN DOS TO BE OFF THE MARK, BUT WILL BE CORRECT WHEN YOU GET INTO WINDOWS ITSELF)

Direct English Version download:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/Win98/Update/8266R/W98/EN-US/263044USA8.EXE

This package installs the updated Fdisk.exe to the Windows\Command and Windows\Options\Cabs folders, on a computer running Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition. If you are starting a computer from a Windows 98 Startup Disk in order to partition and format the hard disk, you should copy the updated Fdisk.exe from the Windows\Command folder to the Startup Disk, replacing the original Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition version of Fdisk.exe on the Startup Disk.

Barracuda hard disk 80gb

More than likely, since you say you did a DOS install of the OS, you did not set the FDISK parameters to set your primary drive. Insert the DOS CD you used to format the system. Boot to a DOS prompt and run the FDISK command. It should have an option, I believe it is number 2 or 3 to "Set primary drive". Select your hard disk 0 as this drive and you should be fine at rhat point.
