Question about Shure SM57-LC Professional Microphone

1 Answer

I just bought the Shure SM57LC mic with the X2u adapter. I plugged it into my usb port and my laptop (compaq, XP, sp3) recognized it and said your new hardware is installed and ready to use. I can hear the mic through the headphones and it sounds great. However, when I tested for recording in Sony Vegas and the basic windows sound recorder, it doesn't record.

Thanks, that was the 1st action I took. I've since learned that it was recording at a seriously low level, -80dB. The mic needs pre-amplification to record into a computer. Less amplification, lower levels. The X2u only pre-amplifies to 48KHz and I need twice that. I'm returning the X2u and purchasing a USB interface that pre-amps to 96KHz.

Make sure that Vegas recognizes the mic in the USB input.
You may have to install the microphone in Vegas.

Hi,
you can't just plug and play with these high end mics. You require a +48v phantom power source from something such as a mixer. Then plug the mic into the mixer and the mixer into the LINE IN on the PC

To connect a professional microphone to a computer, you will need to use a USB adapter such as the Shure X2u. The mic will not work well when connected to the 1/8" mic input on the computer.

I'm thinking of buying this microphone for recording vocals to a computer to produce a song, does it connect to a computer through the microphone jack?

No, it does not. A professional mic will not plug directly into a computer. A USB interface, such as the Shure X2u, would be needed.

I assume you are using the X2u USB adapter. When plugged in, the X2u acts as your sound card for recording and playback. Thus the playback will be on the headphone jack of the X2u. You can select which sound card to use for playback in the Windows Sound Control Panel.

To connect a professional mic to a computer, you will need a USB interface such as the Shure X2u. Professional mics have too low of an output level to be connected directly to a computer.
