If your lens is an AF-S lens, then any of the DSLR's will work with it. If it's the older style auto focus, then the D40 and D40x won't work.

The reason is that the D40 and D60 don't have the motor and rotating screw mechanism that turns the autofocus in the older AF lenses.

The new AF-S lenses have a motor built in, and so they don't need the camera AF motor to focus for them.
