If your camera is under warranty, call Canon and see if they will fix it. If it is not, call Canon 800 number for repair. See if they will fix it, it may be worth your while to find out, and how much if anything it will cost. If it is too expensive, you may have a choice to trade-up or trade in to one of their refurbished units they have. This is a great program, and I have used it more than once.
This may be a problem with these models, but only Canon can give this answer to you. They have great service, and are willing to talk, so do it.

Work with a 1 GB card but shows Error message and card locked on new 8 GB card

The SD600 works with MMC and SD cards. Your new 8GB card is actually an SDHC card. While it fits into the slot, it is electronically incompatible. You need to use SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

We have a PowerShot SD600 camera that is having trouble reading memory cards. It comes up with "Memory Card Error" and "Memory Card Locked" even when the card is not locked. ...

This camera can use only cards with the SD mark on it. An identically physically sized SDHC card may be in the camera and could be causing the issue. Generally, SD cards have capacities up to 2 GB and the SDHC (the HC stands for High Capacity) are those 4GB and larger in capacity.

If the card you're trying to use is an SD card, the card may have become corrupted and need to be replaced. Try with a different SD card to be sure. Hopefully, it's a card problem - not a camera problem.

I bought a new SD card for my powershot SD600. I have tried two different cards and they both say they can be formatted. What is the problem?

Bet it's a brand new SDHC card.
There are several possible causes for "memory card locked", "memory card error", or "no memory card". Some include trying to use of a 4GB SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. Others include problems with the tiny slide switch on the side of the card, or the electrical contact switch internal to the camera. The problem may also arise from simple formatting problems if the card has never been formatted in the camera (note that this will also erase the card). Troubleshooting tips for this problem may be found at this link.

The screen say's memory card error, card locked, but it is a brand new card. I unlocked it and it still says error

I think you have a HC card, Any SD memory card about 2GB runs at a different compression rate to the 'normal' SD cards. ie High Compression. If you do have a larger card in an older camera it will not read, The camera cannot access the information, and it will not work. If it's a 2GB or smaller, try formatting the card - Go to your review menu, press setup and chose format from the list. This should sort it out.

How to format an SD card on a Canon SD600 camera when the menu says "memory card locked." The memory card is in the unlocked position. When we put the SD card in another Canon camera (SD780 IS), it works...

Could be that you have the wrong memory card.
SD600 will only work with the old SD cards, but the SD780 will take the SDHC cards.
SDHC was intended to give 4gb or more of storage, while the old SD started as 16 mb.  Different cameras have different limits, but it is always best to assume that the practical limit on an SD card is 2mb.  Even if the SD780 will take the SDHC cards, it can be more practical to only carry 2GB SD cards and know that they will fit either camera

I have loaded a new memory stick and get a message "memory card error" I have since tried another card and get the same maessage. Any idea waht the issue is.

Well if your camera is an SD600, I'm guessing that you bought a new 4GB SDHC card. Although it looks exactly the same as a standard SD card, the format the card uses is very different. Unfortunately your camera was designed before the SDHC format came out. Sorry, but a SDHC card will not work with your camera.

You'll need to use standard SD cards (usually those 2GB or less). But if you really want to use a 4GB card, do a Google search for 4GB SD "non HC", with the non HC in quotes. Believe Transcend makes one.

My canon sd600 is not reading PNY sdhc memory card. msg says card is locked. it's clearly not locked

HC or High Capacity is not compatible with this camera. You have to buy a memory card which says only "SD" and NOT "SDHC". Cards of 2Gb and less are usually "SD". Cards of 8Gb and more are always "SDHC" for technical reasons. Cards of 4Gb can be either, but the SDHC kind are much more common, because they're cheaper and newer.

Camera thinks memory card is locked

check the pins where the memory card enter, if they are all there (not bended) go to canon site and download the latest framework.

P.S, mack sure to use the right SD Card type as the camera is compatible with some types and with a limited size only.

"Card Locked" error is false!

Remove card from SD600 camera. Locate sliding switch on side of SD card and move from lock to other (unlocked) position. That ought to do it. Compact flash card is another issue.
