I bought the new software update via iTunes and upon restoring my iTouch to it's factory settings to upgrade the software, it just stays on the dark screen with the white apple and can't restore or anything.

You may have to force a restore on it....but you'll lose all your data here's how...

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone or iPod touch, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
  2. Power off the device (Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the the iPhone or iPod touch to turn off.
  3. Press and hold the Home button while reconnecting the USB cable to iPhone. When you reconnect the USB to iPhone, the device should then power on.

Note: If you see the message "Charging... Please Wait" or you see the screen pictured below, let the device charge for at least 10 minutes to ensure the battery has some charge and then start with step 2 again.
  4. Continue holding the Home button while iPhone starts up. While starting up, you will see the Apple logo.
  5. When you see "Connect to iTunes" on the screen, you can release the Home button and iTunes will display the recovery mode message:

I want to reset my Ipod touch to Factory settings

Hold down the power and home keys down for about 10 seconds each while plugged into itunes. When the screen goes black, release the power button but keep holding the home key until itunes says, We have detected an itouch in recovery mode. From there you can restore as normal via iTunes.

- This Is generally how you ipod will come from the factory so do not worry.

When you download itunes from the website and connect for the first time - it is designed to unlock and have you register the ipod

*** if the ipod dose not show in itunes follow theses steps to force the ipod to show ****

This happens some times when the soft ware crashes. It is not generally a problem with the ipod directionally. You just need to restore the ipod, and this will put a new version of the software on.

Once at the computer you will need itunes open and your ipod connected

1) Make sure you have the latest vertion of itunes downloading
you can check this by going to { HELP>CHECK FOR UPDATES}

2) On the ipod hold the sleep wake button at the top and the home button on the bottom at the same time until you see the apple logo

3) Once you see the apple logo - release the sleep/wake button but remain holding the home button

4) You will see an error message from your computer
f53db07.jpg

5) click ok - Then the restore button - the restore will take about 15- 20 minutes

Note: if you have previously backed up the ipod it will prompt you to restore from back up in the restore process

6) re - sync2_bing.gif your content after the restore is complete

7) after sync disconnect and use

I hoped this helped-

** NOTE: If you get an error while restoring the ipod try and restore from another computer ***

I just upgraded to 3.1.1 on my ipod touch 1g. an error message popped up in itunes and my ipod is now stuck at the "connect to itunes" screen. it does not show up in itunes. resetting it does nothing.

Had this problem with itouch 2g as well. Managed to get it back to the way it was like this:
Log onto another account that does not have the 3.1.1 software downloaded. Hold down the Home button and double-click the itunes icon. Wait for itunes to start and it should recognise your ipod is attempting to restore. It should restore it to the previous free firmware version. When itunes prompts you to name your ipod, close itunes, log out, unplug the ipod and log back into your original account. Start itunes and plug the ipod in. It will offer to restore your settings. Restore your settings but refuse the update to firmware 3.1.1 It will then synch as previously.
Still looking to see if there's a way to get 3.1.1 working!

Corrupted iTouch

Update and restore error messages on iPhone and iPod touch Last Modified: April 21, 2009 Article: TS1275 Old Article: 307219 Symptoms When trying to update or restore your iPhone or iPod touch with iTunes, you may see an error message in iTunes that stops the update or restore process. You may also see the "Connect to iTunes" screen on your iPhone or iPod touch:

The error message in iTunes may also include one of the following numbers (but is not limited to): 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 13, 19, -18, -48, -50, 1002, 1011, 1013, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1608, 1609, 1611, 1612, 2003, 2004, -9808
Products Affected iPhone, iTunes 7 for Mac, iTunes 7 for Windows, iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iTunes 8 for Windows, iTunes 8 for Mac, iPod touch (2nd generation) Resolution Many restore errors can be resolved using the troubleshooting steps found in this document.
Update to the latest version of iTunes
To see if you have the latest version of iTunes, open iTunes and:
Windows: Choose Help > Check for Updates Mac: Choose iTunes > Check for Updates

Restart your computer Simply restarting the computer can clear up certain issues that could prevent iPhone or iPod touch from being restored. After restarting, try restoring the device again in iTunes.
USB Troubleshooting Connect iPhone or iPod touch to a different USB port on your Mac or Windows PC. USB 2.0 ports that are built-in to the computer are preferred over a hub. If iPhone or iPod touch were connected to USB ports on the front of the computer, try connecting them to rear USB ports. After doing this, try to restore the device in iTunes.
If this fails, Restore on a different computer. If the issue is not resolved with the above steps, try to restore on a different computer. Ensure that the computer you are restoring on has USB 2.0 ports, the latest version of iTunes, and that you are connecting directly to the computer.
Advanced Steps
Make sure you have admin access

If your still having problems estore using a new user account Create a new user account on your computer and try to restore while logged in as the new user. iTunes will download a new version of the software restore file. After creating the new user, log in to that account and open iTunes and attempt to restore to see whether the issue persists in this new user.

Windows Vista and Windows XP
From the Start menu, choose Control Panel. Open User Accounts. Select Create a new account and follow the instructions to complete the account setup process. Once the new account is created, choose Log Off from the Start menu. Log in to the newly created user account.
When a restore issue is specific to a user, it is likely due to an unusable .ipsw file. The ".ipsw" files are what iTunes uses to restore your iPod or iPhone. If those files are unusable, then try deleting them so iTunes can download a new copy of them. Creating a new user will also cause new .ipsw restore files to be downloaded in the new user. You can find the ".ipsw" files in these locations:
Windows XP iPod touch: C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates (If you don't see the Application Data folder, you may need to show hidden files by opening (My Computer) Click on Folder Options. in that window click on the view tab, and make sure that show hidden files is selected.
Windows Vista iPod touch: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates (If you don't see the AppData folder, you may need to show hidden files)
1. Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options. 2. Click the View tab. 3. Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

After removing and reinstalling the latest version of iTunes, try restoring iPhone or iPod touch again in the origonal user account.

As an added note, If running Microsoft Windows XP and the issue is resolved on another computer, but you continue to experience difficulties on your original computer, you may want to update or reinstall your Windows USB drivers and then try restoring iPhone or iPod touch again.
If none of these steps work you will need to contact either apple at

1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273)
Or another service provider of your choosing to get the ipod touch serviced or replaced.

I hope this article is very helpful for you and easy to follow. Good luck :)

Itouch unlock password

if you do not know your passcode then make sure it is plugged in 2 the cp and make sure the itouch is on the screen where it says enter passcode. then you hold the power and home button at the same time until the itouch completely turns off and then you keep on holding both buttons until the apple logo again. and after that appears, you let go of the power button but you keep holding the home button until the itouch says its connected to itunes. and then you are allowed to access it on itunes. then you need to restore it and it will restore ur hole ipod and there will not be a passcode anymore
