Question about Sony KP-51HW40 51" Rear Projection Television

Open Question

I have a 51HW40 sony TV. A few problems green horizontal retrace that curves flashes green and turns off (about 2 times a month) I wait turn it back on and its fine Codes that have been tripped: 6: Low b 1 8: HV 1 from the service manual i have i know that LOW B OCP/OVP (Overcurrent/over voltage) (See Note 3) ? +5 line is overloaded. (A, B boards) ? +5 line is shorted. (A, B boards) ? No picture I have reset the codes and it has not tripped code 6 in 2 months but has tripped code 8. I know that the green crt is good due to i unplugged the socket at the end and instead of flashing green the screen just went blank for a second, i think it had a little red in it I don't think that the FBT is bad because that would not make it flash green, something is causing it to flash green and that is overloading the FBT sesor which turns the tv off Every time i hit auto program on the remote the tv will flash a few times and once the auto program is off it stops flashing. any ideas?

In the service manual locate the instructions that show the Screen / Focus block adjustments---several of these sets had bad tubes that will cause the set to shut down----If you can get the set on(on a blank video input) locate the green screen control and turn it down until the green in the picture and the curved retrace lines just go away---if it works it may only buy you some time. if one of the crts is bad--sooner or later it can happen again--seen a lot of these that flash blue or red also having retrace lines.

SOURCE: I have a 51HW40 sony TV. A few problems

Hello: Have you tried to adjust you Green Screen control on the focus block assembly. located behind the front panel assembly. Here is a solution that might help you, turn off the green by turning off this control, make sure u look at the block and make sure you are not turning the green focus knob instead of scrn crl. Turning the control slowly to the left the retrace lines should disappear as the green video darkens. Then turn the control slowly to the right just until the retrace lines reappear, then turn back slowly left just until the lines go away. If the screen is Blanking on green tube only then you have a video blanking problem on the main signal board. Or possibly a IK bias problem. It is also possible that the green CRT is defective. The FBT is not bad because the screens are lighting up indicating you have high voltageand heater voltage which is derived from one of the secondary windings of the FB. If it is a Blanking problem i would look into replacing the A Board assembly.

Possible thermal fuse problem.

I too, took off the back of my Sony TV after I started getting red and green shadows (called retrace lines) around words and people; and blew out all the dust inside hoping that would help. Ironically, I discovered that most problems with rear projection TVs are due to a malfunction located in the bottom FRONT panel, accessed by taking off the front speaker panel and then a wooden panel after that to access the circuitry, specifically this little black box with 6 screws on it. Go to www.SomeLifeBlog.com and this site has photos how to take off the front of the tv and instructions how to fix some common problems that repair people will charge you $300-500 to fix. This man, his instructions, photos, and website were a godsend. Good luck.

or a new lamp. you could first replace the lamp.
the screen might work fine for a couple of seconds, but then it fades away or deteriorates. This means the lamp is going bad.

Sony KP-51HW40

I had the same problem with mine 2 years ago (TV was 1.5 years old at that time) I had extended warranty on TV and it was fixed by Sony at no cost to me. Now yesterday I have another problem with it. All of a sudden screen went BLUE. No Sound either. It could be the CRT (That's what I read here) Out of luck this time. Will call local Repair shop (70 miles away) and see how much it will cost to fix it. Good luck.

Green flashes then tv turns off

OMG! My TV has been sitting in a closet for the last three years because I couldn't afford to have it fixed.  I have googled now and then trying to find a cure for its green affliction but never found the right advice until tonight. I can't thank J19666566666 enough!!  I just followed the instructions and presto!  Working TV again! And just in time for the Oscars (which is like the Super Bowl for me).
The editor in me tweaked the instructions a little...
Its is real easy to fix. There are 2 screws holding the front speaker cover on near the bottom corners (there are plastic plugs covering the screws that need to come out first). Unscrew and remove the speaker cover (pull it out from the bottom a little then sort of down and out to get it loose but be careful because there are wires attached). Next remove the 4 screws holding the particle board panel in place. There will be a cluster of 6 adjustment nobs with a drop of white paint on each one (2 rows of 3 - do not touch the top row). The green is controlled by the bottom middle screw, Using a screwdriver turn it counter clockwise (to the left) ever so slightly (1-3mm) and there you have your TV back. Use the bottom right screw to adjust the red and bottom left screw for blue.
Thanks again so much!
