Question about Kenmore 55612 / 55614 / 5561 / 655619 Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Icemaker diagnostics I am running the icemaker diagnostic steps because it is not producing ice and the LED code directs me to Jumper T & H. I have removed the maker and found these two 'ports' or holes labled T & H, but I have no idea what it means to 'Jumper' them to 'bypass the bimetal and start a harvest'. Is there some special tool that I need....a 'jumper' perhaps?

Use an insulated piece of wire , with both ends stripped about 1/2 " . Insert on end into the T hole , and the other into the H hole . This will start the cycling process for the ice maker (bypasses the thermostat) and makes the motor run . Only need to start the motor and then remove the wire and let it go on its own . Do not keep the wire in the test holes .

Ice maker not making ice

Note that the temperature in the freezer must be below 10 degrees F for the icemaker to cycle. The icemaker line is the smaller line (1/4") located in the back of the machine that runs from the valve to the filll tube. To test the valve and icemaker you have to manually advance the ice maker and wait for it to call for water with the 1/4" line disconnected from the valve. You can do this by getting a jumper wire, removing the cover of icemaker, which you jsut grab and pull off, and using the jumper wire insert one end of the wire into the cirle marked "M" and the other in the cicle marked "N". Leave there until you hear a click and sometimes see a little spark behind the modular head wheel. Also if you see ice in the maker that hasn't dumper and the teeth of the icemaker are facing any direction other than two o clock position, the icemaker is bad. Before doing any of the above though check the fill tube to be sure the no ice is blocking water from coming in.

No ice

Pull the machine out and remove the lower back cover. Locate the water valve. With the water turned on and connected remove the 5/16" water line (the bigger one) and then have someone else press the water in the door. If the cylinoid is operating correctly it should spray water out. If it is not operating properly it should at least hum and vibrate. BE SAFE IN DOING THIS NEXT STEP. With the machine plugged in but the wires that go to the valve for the dispenser off take a volt meter and place a lead to each wire and have someone press the panel in the door as if getting water. The reading should go from 0 to around 115-120 a/c.If your not getting electricity down there at anytime than thje door switch is bad. As far as the smaller line (1/4") you have to manually advance the ice maker and wait for it to call for water with the 1/4" line disconnected from the valve. You can do this by getting a jumper wire, removing the cover of icemaker, which you jsut grab and pull off, and using the jumper wire insert one end of the wire into the cirle marked m and the other in the cicle marked n. Ice not ejecting led flashing

Open the freezer door look at flashing led. Now on the left side is a flapper push that in with your hand be sure to keep your hand out of the way of the hole . where the led is now should be solid red. If it isnt then you need new optics. If it is then open the flapper in front of the icemaker at the top of the freezer. You should see the icemaker running width wise in the freezer. You may need a step stool for this next step. The icemaker should have what i call teeth pointing upwards at a 45 degree angle towards you. If these teeth are pointing down in the ice then you need a new module. which is behind the white cover of the icemaker on the left.. Hopefully this helps. Usually the gear head is broken on the module but of course you will have to remove it to find out. Happy hunting

Fridge won't make ice

There is an optics test procedure you can perform on your own to confirm what the repairman says. Assuming you have a whirlpool-made Kenmore (if you have a Pur water filter at the bttom left of your unit, you do), see here:

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/8527f904cc8ea8cd85256b5800672333/$FILE/4322658A.pdf

Basically, the icemaker won't initiate a harvest (dump) cycle unless the electric eye through that cutout at the top of your icemaker can see across the top of the dispenser. If the lens is dirty, or if either the emitter or receiver boards are bad, the optics won't connect. There's a simple diagnosis procedure in that pdf above. Since your fridge is from 2005 like mine, refer to the "post 2002 redesign" optics procedure. Basically the test is to open the fridge and look at the LED, then to close the flapper on the left wall of the freezer and see the change in LED behavior. This can confirm or deny an optics issue. Also, if you remove the little plastic grille at the bottom of your fridge, there'll be a piece of paper folded and stuffed in there with the diagnostic procedure in it as well. To do the full diagnostic procedure, you'll need to remove the icemaker and install a jumper, but to debug optics only, all you need to do is open the door, close the flapper, or maybe push in the door switch and look at how the LED responds.

Whirlpool icemaker

Your unit has infered sensors on the frezzer left and right walls. There is a diagnostic test sheet brown in color in your kick plate. All you have to do is open frezzer door look on the right sensor it should blink twice followed by a 1-2 sec delay,if that is good press in flapper door on right sensor do not block path of infered beam you will not see a beam its invisable.Once you hold in flapper on right sensor the led should be solid. If solid optics are good if not solid led replace optic sensors

if you got 110 volts to ice maker. try jumping out the T & H ( a small insulated copperwire) . this will cause the ice maker cycle, if this does nothing replace the ice maker.(entire assy cheaper then the parts). remeber you might have to shut the door switch to get the 110v. some machines run the power through light switch
