Our fridge ha stale smell when the door is

Our fridge has a stale smell when the door is opened. Otherwise it works perfectly. I cleaned it out and threw out the icecubes and vaccumed out the back and front etc., but it still is there. The fridge is a double door freezer/fridge Whirlpool and is 16 years old. We've neve had a problem with it.
