Question about Hitachi 57F500 57" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television
1.) Based on your description one or both of the two STK-392-110 OR STK-392-150 (SET MAY USE EITHER OF THESE) chips is bad.
2.) If you can do this you can save a lot of money as most TV repair shops charge 300-400 for this kind of repair----you can buy the chips on Ebay for under 20 dollars for a pair OR THERE are several sites on the internet that sell "kits" which include the chips and several resistors that may be needed(they are located around the two chips and sometimes one of them gets taken out when a chip fails---these kits seem to average 40-80 dollars----
3.) The reason this problem happens is the chips are black and about 2 1/2 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches tall with 18 pins each---- the back of each chip is metal and a white grease called heat sink compound is applied to each chip that transfers heat quickly to the heat sink---after 5-8 years the grease dries out and one of the chips gets to hot and fails. You can look inside the set and see them on metal heat sinks with fins---they will have the STK number printed on them in white.
If you unplug the set and remove the back cover look for them and take a close look at all the resistors----most of the time they will look discolored in the middle if they are bad---all have a location number printed on top of the board---if you need more information about this let me know.
4.) If I remember this 2003 model set---the chips will be on the large board on the right(as you look from the back of the set) and if this is what you have I can tell the best way to get at them.
I hope this information was helpful and if you have any questions or want advice let me know.
