Question about Washing Machines

Maytag model LAT8234AAE residential unit produced a burnt electrical smell and was immediately shut off. Agitator was removed revealing no trapped socks and 2 filter screens were clean and intact.Another short test run of about 30 seconds showed that both motor and pump appear to operate normally however main pulley attached to clutch, transmission, and inner/outer drums only turns to a certain point and stops (clockwise rotation looking up),thus making the belt slip and straining the motor. Evidently something has seized up between lower pulley and perforated drum on top.

Belt looks brand new and has acceptable tension. Unless there is something caught between inner and outer drum I don't see how it could jam. Pulley freewheels counterclockwise just fine, but won't spin clockwise after it gets to a certain point.

With unit unplugged there seems to be a thunking noise in the clutch area about 6 inches before belt travel is stopped. Belt is being moved back and forth between thumb and finger.

Before I start buying repair parts I need to be sure I've got the right one on order. I can easily guess at what may be wrong, but I need an experts opinion to be sure because guessing at solutions can get expensive very quickly.Maybe I should run the machine through a short cycle to find out exactly when the problem pops up. I could stay right next to the on/off switch to prevent a burnout.

Can you tell by the model # how old this unit is? I decided to run the unit all the way through a short cycle and started off fine with the main pulley spinning normally counter clockwise until the timer decided it was time to reverse direction to clockwise. Without even a half turn the pulley stopped rotation and would not move even though the motor was pushing hard and making the belt slip. I stopped the unit and await your expert diagnosis. If the unit is past the point of economically sensible repair please say so and recommend your best brand choice for long life, not price.

The transmission is locked up. You probably smelled the belt burning when the motor shaft was turning and the transmission was not turning.

When the washer goes into a spin, the first 1/3 revolution or so of the big pulley is suppose to release the break so the inner tub can spin. Sounds like a break package problem. Not generally an easy or cheap fix. Don't take the break package appart, as the spring tension inside can actually result in injury. I'd say you've gotten your expected life out of this unit. (By the way, these units were MUCH better than the newer Maytag's) If I were you, I'd look into a new front load energy star washer, which use 1/4 to 1/3 the water, and spin out twice as fast or more than your old Maytag. In my opinion, the direct drive LG units are the best, but there are several others which are also good.

This sounds as though you have a defective clutch bearing if the noise occur at the same point.

Recheck that there is nothing caught up in the mechanism. also check that the tensioner is working, it may need a new belt as that burning smell was likely the belt.

inspect the belt for glazing and or cracking. if the belt has been overheated it will stretch and have to be replaced.

Laundry is trapped under the base of the agitator.

Im not very familiar with that type of top loadign washer,,, but on most agitators there is a bolt that runs down the center of the agitator, connecting it to the transmission/gearbox. Usually there is a cap, or softner dispenser that can be pulled off, revealing this bolt.

Vacuum shuts off and has a burnt smell

Hi,
Try removing the drivebelt, and try running it to test like this. The brush bar will not turn, but it should function normally without smell at this point. If it doesn't, you may need a new motor as I think the brushes may have worn down - producing an electrical type burning smell.

If it runs fine without the belt attatched, then there is probably a build-up of hair or threads at each end of the roller stopping it turning freely. With the hoover off, check it turns freely and easily. A small metal nail file or similar is usually a good tool to clear it.

If the roller is stiff, the belt will not turn easily, and overheat on the motor spindle - causing the burning smell.

Top Loading Maytag washer will not rinse/drain and spin.

you may have a locked up pump causing the motor to not run, check to see if you can turn the belts under the unit, if so then you might have a timer with a burnt contact.
hope its the pump as it is cheaper then the timer to replace.

NO Agitator, draining or spin

Since the breaker did not trip i am going to assume that the washer stopped because the motor overload switch tripped or contacts burnt. Was there any smell of any burning (electrical burning)?. It could have stopped because a contact on the timer got burnt too. Have a look also at the water level swirch

I have a foul smell comming from my washer I want to try to take off the agitator and clean it How? :)

It depends on what model Maytag washer you have. If you have an Atlantis or Performa model Maytag you remove the agitator by, first, pulling the agitator cap and softener dispenser off. Locate the bolt on the center post and and loosen. The agitator will pull straight up to remove. If this is a Dependable Care model Maytag, there's a 1/4 inch screw located on the SIDE of the agitator about 3 quarters of the way down. Locate this screw and loosen. The agitator will pull straight up to remove. I hope this helps you.

Maytag neptune dryer wont restart mde 3000 aya

Your dryer needs a new motor. It should cost about $200-250 including labor. Call a local repairman - not a national company. Give him the model number and ask him to bring the motor with him.

Good luck!
