PowerMac G5 with dual 2.7 processors powers on but no video

Have a PowerMac G5 with dual 2.7 processors. When I press the power button the unit powers on but the white power indicator light goes out and a tiny red led light comes on by the memory banks. The unit runs but the monitor is black. Any ideas.

There are seven diagnostic LEDs near the memory banks of this model: six in a tight line between the edge of the logic board and DIMM bank 1, and the seventh just underneath DIMM bank 1 and slightly more inboard. Please tell me which of these LEDs are on and I will tell you what they mean.

I'm sorry, the information I gave you previously is for a different model of PowerMac G5. You have the "Early 2005" version with liquid cooling. There is only one red LED on this model. If it is on, it indicates one of the following three failures:

    1) The clear plastic air deflector door is not in place.

    2) The white sensor label is damaged or not in place on the lower right tab of the air deflector door.

    3) The air deflector sensor board is not operating properly.

You can differentiate case 2 from case 3 by removing the air deflector door and sliding a folded piece of paper through the slot where the right tab of the air deflector would normally extend. If the LED goes out (but stays on with the door in place), the sensor label on the door is missing or damaged.

I would also reseat the video card just for completeness.

Powermac G5 screen shaking

This sounds possibly like a power related issue. If you are using a simple power strip to plug into, consider replacing it with an Uninterruptible Power Supply (aka Battery Backup, UPS). AC power related issues can cause screen waviness or shaking. Be sure to obtain the proper capacity unit for your needs. These units are rated in Volt AMPS and come in sizes from 300VA to 1500VA in the consumer product line. APC, Belkin, Triplite, CyberPower are some popular brands. The VA capacity to choose should be considered over price alone. Buying the cheapest one vs the right capacity can result in not having a unit capable of protecting your devices plugged into it. Understand these have 2 primary functions,
1. surge-protection
2. battery backup during a power related problem
There are 2 different banks of receptacles on these units.
1. Some for surge protection AND battery backup
2. Some for surge protection ONLY
Your computer would be plugged into the surge AND battery backup receptacles. When a power related incident occurs, the unit quickly switches the devices plugged into these receptacles off of AC power to the batteries, until the power issue is resolved. The time on battery is limited based on the VA capacity mentioned earlier in this solution. So buying the largest VA capacity unit you can afford will simply give you more available time on battery before the batteries are exhausted and must be recharged. On the other hand buying the smallest VA unit could result in an immediate and unexpected shut down of the computer if a power related issue occurs and the battery backup cannot handle the devices plugged into it. NEVER use these units for battery backup of Laser Printers or other high curent devices. These can destroy the battery backup.
I hope this helps with your screen issue.

Video jitter on youtube on power pc

Try using the browser Google Chrome, it has flash built in and it is a bit faster.
If this doesn't work, you'll have to kill some programs to get more processing power. Press and hold the command key, and then tap tab while still holding command to cycle through your running programs. Let go to stop on one you kill, and then press Command + q to kill it. Do this with as many programs as you can to get better performance, you can always start them up again later.
If none of this works, you may need to upgrade your graphics card...sorry.

I have an apple mac g5 10.4 osx. the mouse has a light instead of ball and i got a warning the battery was going dead. i have bought 8 batterys and none work i bought panasonic cr2032 but no work. can you...

Thanks for contacting Fixya Support, I am glad to assist.

The issue may not be with the type of CMOS battery you are attempting to use, so much as what you are doing once you install the new CMOS battery.

You need to make sure that after you install the battery, before replacing the Air duct and closing the chassis, you press the SMU Reset button on the logic board then attempt to restart your Power Mac G5 and see if it makes a difference.

I would recommend you view the PowerMac G5 manual I have provided for you below, in order to get more a perspective on the process of replacing a battery in the PMG5.

Let me know if this helps.

I have an Apple PowerMac G4. The power light comes on when I push, but immediately goes out when I release. I swapped the power supply with a good one I had, but got the same result.

I had the same, swapped power supply and all the wiring to the board, no change. Probably the main board but press the tiny buttons on the board.

How to replace the power supply on a powermac G5

I would be very cautious doing this, if you are not an Apple tech. You can damage the connector for the G5 Processors, and render the machine un-usable.

You have to remove the RAM and Processor, then remove the two power connectors that connect from the power supply to the logic board. On the bottom, underside of the chassis, there are four screws. Remove them, then you can tilt the power supply out of the bottom of the unit.

Replacement, is just the reverse.

Is this a G5 2.7, dual 2.5 with a multicore processor using a liquid cooling system? If so open the case and check to see if any liquid is actually leaking. See xlr8yourmac.com for a whole bunch of postings on the issue.

Powermac g4 will not turn

this is a common problem with G4 Quicksilver. Your power-supply is defect and has to be replaced. I have 4 G4s in my lab with the same symptom: a short flash of the power-button light, sometimes it turns on, but mostly the machine is dead.
