Model RP42HD51-A. 42" Micro Display Projection
The power indicator comes on, and you can hear the TV starting up, but then it totally shuts off, sits for about 30 seconds and then tries to restart by itself.

What is the model of your set? Is it a LCD? / Plasma? CRT? The poping noise could of been a Capacitor in the power supplu, does the power indicator come on?

Hello Bererrols4:

The problem is your lamp has blown, if its been at least two years since you have had this set its time for a new lamp. Sound like your lamp shattered, no worry it is self contained in its housing, Heres's how to pull the lamp and check it, I am assuming when the tv tries to start and fails there is a blinking led on the front of the television, anyway standing in fornt of your television look on the left side for a small sized door with a door and one screw holding it, this is your camp compartment, open the door and look inside you should see a black shaped box of some sort this is your lamp, remove the two screws holding it in place and pull it out, Look at the lamp it may of shatter in its glass... Just replaced this lamp and your problem will be solved. I am giving you a link to use for purchasing a new one and your usuers manual just in case you don't have the orginal ok. The site is http://www.vivitekcorp.com/downloads.php Another note: You can purchase the bulb itself and not the entire housing and replacing the bulb in your orginal housing, if you are some what mechinically incline...
This will save you money doing it this way. FYI. You may contact Vivitek corp for part number of your lamp, just make sure the bulb is of Phillips brand...

Hi it sounds like it has had an elctric fault like a resistor failing.
The click you heard would be a internal switch that cuts off the elctric supply to the screen to stop furthe damage hapening.
It could even be something simple like a bad solder and in that case will need locating and resoldering.
How old is the telly and how often is it used.
When you switch it off leave it off for about an hour then try again if you have allready done this then it probably is a blown resistor are you sure nothing has been pressed on controll have you tried seeing if you can acess the menu screen via the remote and see if that comes up on the screen let me know ok

Most likely what happened is one of the capacitors went bad. When a capacitors goes bad it produces a popping sound. This could be an easy and cheap fix if you find the bad capacitor or capacitors. The bad capacitor will have a bulging top most likely on the power board but could be anywhere.

Unfortunately, that board is the inverter board. And for this model the inverter board is only supplied with the the PDP panel. The panel is quite expensive, here's a link if needed:
