Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router (DSLSWRT54G)
Setting up routers is best when done one step at a time.
Has anyone connected successfully directly to the internet service providers hardware using a wired connection, if possible?
Is the router connected through the internet service providers hardware or does it replace the internet service providers hardware?
Before dealing with the wireless has any computer connected successfully to the internet using a wired connection THROUGH THE LINKSYS ROUTER? They will not have to stay that way but a test without the wireless is less complicated.
When all the above is successful it is time to test the wireless, preferably first unencrypted for a short time and later probably encrypted in the final solution.
Does all the above sound like a reasonable step by step approach? If so let's continue --
First let me know how far we have successfully tested in the step by step tests by answering the above.

There are some skills you will need as we go along so here are some tests you can attempt
Perform the following steps on a wired and a wireless computer -- this will yield useful information and record the answer.
This assumes Windows XP (probably Win2000 and maybe Vista)
Click Start select all All Programs select Accessories and click on Command Prompt
In the open window type
Record the adapter, IPaddress, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS addresses for each adapter (there may be more than one and report them here for each machine.
then you will ping the default gateway address that probably starts with 192.168.?.? to do this in the open window type

It works when a line comes back with elapsed time generally in ms or milliseconds -- it fails when you recieve a timeout message these normally occur in a block of 4.
