- This is definately a laptop fault, as I have an identical machine that operates fine from the power pack. There appears to be a short between the positive pins and earth at the power socket on the laptop.
1. Power OFF laptop
2. Remove battery
3. Use power pack and turn ON laptop (without battery)
4. The laptop will work.
5. After Windows has settled down, insert battery (with laptop on and Windows running).
6. Allow the power pack to catch up a couple of hours.
7. It will work now...

- Kiwi,
Thanks for the comment and more info regarding the issue.
Yup, follow parrothead's solution.....
Your power pack has a voltage regulator built into it to maintain and controlled and steady correct voltage. These devices are usually under a great deal of stress and fail often. The thing to remember about power supplies for laptops is you get what you pay for. The PSUs that are coming from overseas will power your laptop but they get very hot, fail frequently and in most cases will not give you a reliable stable power supply. Your power supply is shot and you will need another to properly run your machine.

- I stand corrected....I also noted that if the AC jack is the culprit it is connected to the main board by a cable making the replacement possible without soldering the connection. I am including two links for the disassembly of the 300 which is a close cousin to the 400. The links are below.

my laptop nec versa stopped to work suddenly bacause of an alteration of the electricity (ups and downs) while it was connected. I disconnected it, took the battery out, clicked the start button shortly, replaced the battery, and it worked again. But as I touch or move the laptop, it stops again. Is the battery gone or is it something else?
