You will have to do so under connection properties,There you will see a option on the lower left to enable this feature.

File Sharing in Windows 2000/XP Pro


Before setting up file sharing
  • Your computer must be connected to the campus network in order to set up file sharing. If you need to connect your computer to the network.
  • You will need to log into your computer using an Administrator account (in most cases, this is the account you normally log in with).
  • Make sure you are logging into your computer by using a password and that every other user account on your computer is set up with a password. If your computer does not have password-protected user account(s), you are at high risk from hackers taking over your computer and using it for illegal purposes without your knowledge.
  • Install the latest security patches and updates.
  • Check your anti-virus program and make sure it is up-to-date.
  • For computers with Windows XP Pro:
    • If your computer was set up to work on a LAN at home or any place other than Wellesley, you must disable the non-Wellesley network connections in order for file sharing to work correctly. Note: You will need to re-enable these connection(s) when you take your computer off the Wellesley College network, i.e. off-campus.
      1. Go to the Start menu and select the Control Panel.
      2. If you do not see the Network Connections icon in the Control Panel, click on the link for Switch to Classic View near the top left of the window.
      3. Double-click on the Network Connections icon.
      4. In the Network Connections window, to check which Local Area Connection icon is for Wellesley, select the icon and make sure the Details menu on the left side of the window is displayed (double-arrows next to the word Details should be pointing down). The IP Address should start with 149.130.
      5. If you see any other Local Area Connection icons or 1394 Connection icons listed in the Network Connections window, right-click on the connection and select Disable from the menu.
      6. Close any open windows.
    • If you have Windows XP Pro's Internet Connection Firewall enabled, it will prevent your computer from being able to share files and prevent you from using several resources at Wellesley College. To turn it off:
      1. Go to the Start menu and select the Control Panel.
      2. If you do not see the Network Connections icon in the Control Panel, click on the link for Switch to Classic View near the top left of the window.
      3. Double-click on the Network Connections icon.
      4. In the Network Connections window, right-click on Local Area Connection (the one for Wellesley as described in step 4 above) and select Properties from the window.
      5. Click on the Advanced tab.
      6. Uncheck Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet and then click OK.
I. Configure your computer for file sharing You will only need to configure your computer for file sharing once. If the option for file sharing is already set up on your computer or if you wish to set up another shared folder on your computer.
    1. Go to the Control Panel.
      • In Windows 2000, click on the Start button and then select Settings > Control Panel.
      • In Windows XP Pro, click on Start and then select the Control Panel.
    2. Double-click on the Network Dial-Up Connections or the Network Connections icon. In Windows XP, if you do not see this icon, click on Switch to Classic View located on the left side of the window to see all Control Panel options.
    3. In the new window that appears, right-click on the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties from the menu.
    4. In the Local Area Connection Properties window, check that the General tab is selected. Under the This connection uses the following items: or the Components checked are used by this connection section, check that File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is listed and make sure that its checkbox is checked. If it is listed, the computer is already configured for file sharing; click Cancel and skip to the next section.
    5. Click the Install button.
    6. Click once on Service to select that option.
    7. Click Add.
    8. Click once on File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks to select it and then click OK.
    9. Click Close.
    10. If the computer asks to restart, click No.
Setting up the folder that will be shared Only folders may be shared, not individual files, i.e. if you wish to share a file named blue.doc, then you must put blue.doc inside a folder and then share that folder by following the directions below. Note: If a Windows 98 computer is going to access your shared folder, then the name of your shared folder should not contain any spaces.
    1. Right-click on the file or folder to be shared. In the drop-down menu that appears, select Sharing or Sharing and Security.
    2. Select Share this folder. The name of the folder that appears on the network may be changed by typing in the new name in the Share name field.
    3. Click on Permissions.
    4. Click once on Everyone to select it and then click Remove.
    5. Click Add.

2004 Emachine- when desktop comes up on lower right there's a flashing icon when clicked on says "Network Connections", Local Area Connection, Network Cable Unplugged, Intel{R} PRO/100 VE...


If the local area connection icon specifies as network cable unplugged, then the computer has not sensed the connection between the computer to the cable modem / DSL modem, please reseat the cable behind the cable / dsl modem to the computer. If the icon still shows unplugged, then change the network cable between the two.

If the issue still persists, please revert with more details lik the kind of internet connection used and the reason for reinstalling.

It is possible your webcam is either disabled or the driver is corrupted. Try reloading the webcam software driver, reboot, and then try the free webcam test tool to check if it is working properly.

Can you tell me when the network driver in Windows gets loaded. I read some where that it does not get loaded until you get to screen in XP Pro. Is this true?


The network drivers do not load until you boot to Windows. I'm not sure what you mean by the XP Pro Screen but you have to be at the desktop level to have them load.

A good way to test when they've loaded is to go to your network connections after you're fully booted and right click on your connection. Choose properties. Check the box that says: Show icon in notification area when connected.

Two little computers should then appear in the right side of the system tray by the clock.

When you reboot, those will not appear again until the drivers have loaded.

You can use a wireless network to share Internet access, files, printers, and more. Or you can use it to surf the Web while you're sitting on your couch or in your yard. Plus, it's easier to install than you think.
There are 4 steps to creating a wireless network:
1.
Choose your wireless equipment
2.
Connect your wireless router
3.
Configure your wireless router
4.
Connect your computers
For Windows XP users, Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not required for wireless networking, but it does make things much easier. Service Pack 2 also helps protect you against hackers, worms, and other Internet intruders.

Connect your computers
If your computer does not have wireless network support built in, plug your network adapter into your USB port, and place the antenna on top of your computer (in the case of a desktop computer), or insert the network adapter into an empty PC card slot (in the case of a laptop). Windows XP will automatically detect the new adapter, and may prompt you to insert the CD that came with your adapter. The on-screen instructions will guide you through the configuration process.
Note: The steps below only apply if you're using Windows XP Service Pack 2. If you're running Windows XP and you don't have Service Pack 2 yet, plug your computer into your wireless router and download and install Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Windows XP should show an icon with a notification that says it has found a wireless network.

Right-click the wireless network icon in the lower-right corner of your screen, and then click View Available Wireless Networks. If you run into any problems, consult the documentation that came with your network adapter. Don't be afraid to call their tech support.

The Wireless Network Connection window should appear and you should see your wireless network listed with the network name you chose. If you don't see your network, click Refresh network list in the upper-left corner. Click your network, and then click Connect in the lower-right corner.

Windows XP prompts you to enter a key. Type the encryption key that you wrote down earlier in both the Network key and Confirm network key boxes, and then click Connect.

Windows XP will show its progress as it connects to your network. After you're connected, you can now close the Wireless Network Connection window. You're done.
Note: If the Wireless Network Connection window continues to show Acquiring Network Address, you may have mistyped the encryption key.

Format error


Do you realize that formatting your hard drive DELETES ALL of the data on that drive?

As in, gone forever...

So if you have a desktop, then you likely didn't do a "format", so WHAT did you do?

Was the PC you "formatted" an XP Pro machine, or just XP Home?

I'm not sure, but using an XP Pro disc on an XP Home machine may break things.

If it's an XP Pro machine then just put the disk back into the drive and follow the path to perform a windows repair installation.

Maxstor shared Storage II 500GB


Try mapping that drive as a network share under windows XP. This is done from "MY Computer" Map network drive. The set up your backups to back up the network drive you have created. If that does not do it then there is a contention between vista and xp as to the owner of the drive. Making the drive a mapped network drive should resolve this as neither should have ownership. Thats my best quess without knowing in detail your network setup.
