Question about GE 46GW 948 46" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

I've had a Toshiba CF2666A, chassis 9100 for years. Beautiful image. But the problem is, after warming up for 20 - 30 minutes, a loud 'pop' sound comes from the speakers, followed by the audio going out completely. Picture is still good. If turned off and allowed to cool down, the problem repeats itself the same way. I am not an electronics tech, but I am well versed with troubleshooting and repairing some electronics and can make my way around a schematic or pcb. Any thoughts? I'm thinking a resistor is heating up and shutting off a transistor... or something along that line. Thanks in advance for the advice. Dennis

My problem is the same as the rest of these, My T9100 has lost the driver for the Yamaha AC-GX sound device. It worked find until I installed XP SP2, I've been to various forums and followed...

The 9100 series are famous for this problem, and it's more than likely hardware related and not driver related: the connector on the motherboard (where the sound card connects to) is probably loose - so it's not seeing the sound card (or only seeing part of it). Problem is probably caused by chassis flex over the years, and it's pretty common.

Solutons? Dunno... I've fixed about a thousand of these but over the years, about 1 out of 5 had the same problem recur, and I'm tired of fixing these things. Cheapest workaround? Get a cheap USB sound card and a cheap set of laptop speakers (cost me about $4 total) - a little cumbersome, but it don't cost anything....

Resolders the FBT-(flyback tranformer).Resolders the video board connections sockets holes, that the board connected to the CRT-(tv tube).Plug in the tv,to have power to the tv,take out the tv video board, for exposer of the CRT-(tv tube).Take an electrical wire with a good insalation in it,grounded to the tv steel frame some where.Take the other end of the wire go toward the open high voltage CRT-(tv tube).U will hear a pop sound, than ur tv CRT-(tv tube) is a 100% clean out of contaminations or u will hear a deeing sounds only, mean the tv CRT-(tv tube) it is to old to pop anymore, just let tv deeing sounds going on for like about 20 mins to rejuvenated the old CRT-(tv tube). After this repluging the tv video board for a tv signal and readjust the button on the FBT-(flyback tranformer) that said focus to fix the CRT-(tv tube) focus problems.

It pops and shuts off when I first turn it on. It finally stays on with sound and grey screen which changes colors. then the picture finally comes in about 20 minutes later

NEVER operate a set after it makes a loud pop. Only high voltage discharges can make such a sound. It is DANGEROUS to operate a set under those conditions. The chassis could be electrified or it could start a fire. Contact a qualified service technician.

Picture looks like it is jumping

Sounds like a vertical sync issue on the chassis board. However you also mentioned the picture moves left to right or vice versa which would suggest a horizontal sync issue. Either issue is not repairable by the DIY. Sync issues must be isolated using test equipment usually found in repair shops. My suggestion push it down a hill and enjoy the show then go buy that flat screen you almost purchased last week.

No sound

try to check the speakers or microphone lines and jacks whether they are connected properly . if still does not work, then check the audio settings under sound and devices in control panel.
If still makes no difference , then try reinstalling the audio drivers via the CD that was provided to you or u can find the drivers on http://www.toshiba.com or http://www.driverfiles.net/Notebooks/Toshiba/Tecra-9100/download/page,sh,31396,221,19,.html

On one minute then POP loud noise, burning smell

Loud popping and loss of power is common on plasma TVs and is usually either the Y sustain or Z sustain boards or buffers; in these instances the damaged part will be quite evident.

If this is an LCD you might have degraded insulation on one of the pink/blue backlight power leads causing high voltage to 'arc' to the chassis.

The loud bang and smell is actually to your advantage as in these circumstances the damaged part is usually evident. It'll just be a matter of popping the back off and sleuthing around. :)
