Why does the fan run constantly when there is a temperature setting? When it is cool enough, how can I get the fan to stop blowing without turning the entire unit off?

Compressor shuting down

Either the thermostat is prematurely shutting down the compressor or the latter is overheating and the clixon is shutting it down.

The defrost timer also will shut down the compressor and all fans but that is only once every 10 hours or so to defrost unit. In about t10 15 minutes the timer will turn the compressor back on.

How to troubleshoot thermostat wiring?

I'm not sure if the thermostat is wired correctly. First, the thermostat is wired directly to the outdoor unit (compressor/condenser unit). It is NOT directly connected to the indoor unit. It connects to a low voltage control panel in the outdoor unit that sends a signal to your indoor fan/evaporator. This wire is called the fan relay switch and physically runs between the low voltage controls of the indoor and outdoor units. If the fan relay is bad it's possible that the unit runs continuously. To prevent destroying your outdoor unit there is a safety feature that prevents the indoor fan from shutting down while the outdoor unit is running. If the indoor fan did shut down while the outdoor unit was running than you would slug your compressor. That is, your compressor normally sees refrigerant gas but is instead seeing refrigerant liquid. That would not be good since this scenario would destroy your compressor. It sounds like a faulty fan relay. The actual contactor portion of the relay is in the outdoor unit.

I have a carrier Day & Night a/c - heater unit. the model # 591ANX0480000ACAA, 208/230 volts. my blower fan stays on continuously, even after turning the thermostat off. the condenser fan does not come on...

If the blower fan in the furnace won't turn off, there is a tripped/blown limit. It's a safety. As for your condenser fan it could be a run cap or motor. Do yourself a favor and have a licensed HVAC contractor take a look. Find a NATE certified or ACCA member. You will find a much better more qualified contractor.

The indoor fan or the outdoor fan? If it is the indoor fan the thermostat may be wired incorrectly or shorted. If the red wire and green wire in your thermostat maintain contact, the indoor fan will run all the time.

Dan is this a new system, or has some work on the system (to include the thermostat) been done recently?

Sounds like the thermostat may be wired wrong. From what you describe, the igniter element is coming on, as though you are calling for heating. Do you allow the ignitor to keep going and see if the gas fires off, or are you seeing this and shutting down the system immediately?

If you had the t-stat changed recently, or this is a new system, contact the installing contractor. It may be under warranty.

Carrier A/C Intermittent Shut-down Problem

It sounds like there is something in the system that is over heating. A t-stat will either work or it won't there are relays that have 24v coils and can become weak. If your air handler is shutting down it shut down the condenser, if the air handler is staying on but condenser is shuting down check the outside contactor. I am an a/c contractor and can be contacted at 504-722-3946 Eddie.
