Question about GIMP GNU Image Manipulation Program

1 Answer

I am unsuccessful in moving images from 'My Pictures'to a GIMP canvas without degrading the resolution. If I 'edit with GIMP', I get a very large image, which has to be reduced in size. Can I keep the size of the original somehow?

Thank you. The basic problem, which happens whether, 1; I slide the image (300 ppi) from the windows XP file directly onto the GIMP canvas or, 2 ; I edit the image with 'edit in GIMP' then copy & paste into the canvas, is that the image is enlarged four times, with a corresponding reduction in resolution (to 72 ppi). When I then scale to the required size, I still have 72 ppi. I can't copy & paste directly from the XP file to the GIMP canvas: Apparently the Windows system & the GIMP system do not share the same clipboard. I would appeciate your further comments. Thanks again.

How do I decrease photo resolution so that it is compatible with my computer

Do you want to resize the photo to match the resolution of your computer screen? (For example, to use as wallpaper.) If so you can try several free programs such as GIMP or Google Picasa.

GIMP has many features from basic to advanced. Picasa is excellent for adjusting, resizing and orhanizing all of your photos. Both are 100% free and trustworthy.

What's the problem when gimp will not load because gnu image manipulation program stop work....what do it mean? pls explain someone.

On my computer, when gimp stops operating, its normally because its processing something. When the splashscreen pops up, it'll often freeze for almost a minute while its initiating.
It also freezes when I try to render a large image, or apply a filter to a large image. I can always just wait it out.

It shouldn't take more than five or six minutes, if it takes that long and still refuses to work, uninstall and reinstall. If the issue persists, download a fresh copy of the latest version of GIMP and install that.

Download the GIMP ("Graphical Image Manipulation Program") from: http://www.gimp.org

This is _FREE_ software for doing many things that Photoshop will do (for a lot more money),
e.g., cut, crop, select, transform, resize, tint.

Hi, I can't drag and drop an image in gimp

You cannot drag and drop an image into another in the Gimp. Open Both images in Gimp then, Select > All on the image you want to copy and click Edit > Copy. Move the destination image and click Edit > paste and it will add it as a new layer. From there you can name the layer and anchor it.

My kids first trip to disneyland..we took tons of pictures had the camera on an aito setting...all of our pictures came out completly white you can barely make out the image.can this be fixed?I was told I...

Normally if a digital images is "blown out" there is little that can be done to bring it back. Before going out and spending money on a Photoshop program take the media card to an actual camera dealer one who processes and prints and see if they can bring the images back. I also don't want to build faults hopes. I'm sorry for your loss but the good thing is now you have an excuse to go back.

How do you draw on GIMP 2?

Open a new file, enter the size of picture you want to draw, click on OK.
This gives you a new canvas, click on the pencil in toolbox on the left hand side, bring your cursor back over to the canvas press and keep the left mouse button down and move the mouse, you're drawing.

Change picture resoltion

While it is common to down size images without losing picture quality, it is unfortunately not really possible to Increase the size of an image without losing picture quality (As you are currently experiencing)

This is why most digital cameras have such a high resolution, so that they can produce very large images that may be scaled down to the end users requirements.

Digital Picture Frame Shows Black Bars

The nature of 16:9 basically means that you will be losing photo information in normally framed 4x5/5x7 photos. There is no way to fix this because the frame size of 16:9 is wider than 4x5/5x7. The options the frame offers are the only options to make your photos fit. Either crop, or distort.

The best solution is to keep this in mind when taking photos from now on and assume you will be cropping the top and bottom of the image.

As for the photos you have already taken, the only viable tactic to take is to reframe them for 16:9 yourself. You can download a free photo editing application like "GIMP" to do this. Create a new project that is 800x450 pixels. This will give you a 16:9 canvas. Next drag your existing photos into this canvas and move it around and resize it until you find a suitable framing for your picture.

Unfortunately it seems that as 16:9 solidifies itself as the new screen standard people are finding that shooting photos framed for 4:3 or in portrait dimensions are not translating well to this new standard. You may even want to consider returning this frame and looking for a 4:3 aspect ratio frame if cropping/resizing is not acceptable for you. Good luck!

Does Hypict really help the resolution?

Hypict degrades image qulity a bit because it is interpolation. You can basically do the same thing in photoshop with similar results, I haven't tested this yet. What it does do is make a beter looking 11x14 print than using the 1200x1600 setting, with no after shot manipulation by the user, so if you knew you wanted the image bigger for some reason, and didn't want to manipulate it later you would do this.
