Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console

360 Disk Drives

My disk drive is completely shot. Anywhere that I can get a replacement disk drive? It doesn't read anything and it was one of the newer models. I don't want to replace the entire Xbox 360 and I really don't want to send it back to the manufacturer to have to wait forever to get it back. I just want to replace that disk drive.

Re: 360 Disk Drives

This is a common problem and some people even choose to replace the DVD drive to reduce the noise while the console is operating.

Here's a link to help identify what drive you have in your console now:

Is not reading game disks

This is going to be a bit long -- but very detailed, so please read it carefully. There are several reasons that an xbox 360 system will have problem reading discs. The error messages also vary from unreadable disk, no message at all but the game skips, "please insert disc in a 360 console" to "open tray." There are a few reasons this mayhappen:

1.Bad disc. Check the back of your disc for scratches. If it looks good (or plays fine in another console), then the disc is probably fine. Also-- try more than 1 game to be sure.

2. Bad laser. The XBox 360 has a DVD drive very similar to a PC's DVD drive inside. The drive contains a bunch of parts including a few motors and gears and a laser. The laser is the part that actually reads the disc. The reality is...with all the hours and hours of game play, lasers do eventually wear out. The laser isn't very easy to replace, but it is replaceable. You can find any and all XBox 360 lasers at the following website:

3.Bad DVD Drive. Sometimes other components inside of the DVD drive can become bad such as the motor that spins the disk, the motors that open the tray, etc, etc. You can get a new DVD drive to just replace everything, including the laser, in one shot but there is a catch. The XBOX 360's DVD drive is tied to the motherboard using a software lock. The easiest way to overcome this lock is to buy the exact same manufacture DVD drive that is in your system now, remove the circuit board from the old DVD drive (which contains the software key) and transfer the circuit board into the new DVD drive that you purchase. If you do this simple procedure, there is no flashing involved. The following website carries DVD drives and also provides instructions on swapping the circuit board from the old drive into the new one.

System will not read disk. Keep getting open tray, Have use the dust spray still not working.

An 'Open Tray' error with an XBox 360 is typically a sign that the CD/DVD drive itself is faulty. This will require it to be replaced, which is not as easy as just swapping them out.

The new drive must be of the same make and model of the old drive. If I recall, there are Samsung and Toshiba drives in 360's. Once you have the exact replacement drive, the CD Drive's firmware must be flashed on a PC in order to be compatible and detected by your XBox.

Console will not read disk. always says open tray after mulitble times of opening and closing games seem to pull though and work. is it the laser or spinner

Well, it could be your disk is scratched (but im sure you didnt post this just for someone to say you have a scratched disk the best do it yourself solution to this problom is to take your 360 apart and replace the disk drive all together. You could find the parts on ebay or whatever, is very easy to replace the disk drive, pretty much once you get the case off...(hint: only remove the long screws) cuz those are the ones hold the case together..pretty much after that you just remove the disk drive, remove the two cables that are attached to it, and put in the new diskdrive..oh and make sure you get the right disk drive in there, Microsoft used 2 diffrent brands or disk drives (im not sure if they make a diffrence but better safe then sorry) it will say which one you got on the disk drive when you take it out... OH!! and before you do anything, call 1800 4myxbox and SEE IF YOU HAVE ANY WARRENTY ON THE CONSOLE, cuz if you do, the repair will be free. hope this helped ya...Later ;)

Error msg: to play this disc put in xbox 360

the Laser In The DVD Drives Failed.
Try a CD/DVD to see if it will read A single Layer DVD, Rather than the 360 Dual-Layer Disk.

You might try a laser head cleaning CD Disk.

Or requires drive replaced et,c. ** This is not swappable And should Be caried out by """ An Xbox 360 Drive Replacement Specialist, As the dvd drives logic board is paired to the Motherboard, And therefore have to be re-matched.

Hi, I'm still unable to update the xbox 360

your probably not doing anything Wrong.
did you boot the console then eject the draw, and put the update disk In ?
it should read the disk, then tell you it,s an update, and ask you if you want to update the console.
Make sure your hard-drives connected.
The only other thing i can suggest, is to make sure your 360 reads the disks or media your using.
if you try burning a music cd, and see if the 360 recognises it, you,ll know the media or Blank CD/DVD is good for the 360 to read. another method is to add a dummy file of about 80-100mb.
this ensures the 360 sees the disk.
try different media/disks and different methods.
if it still does,nt work for you. mail me your e-mail address and i,ll forward you 1 already made.

Xbox 360

Sounds like you have a faulty DVD drive. If you are still in warranty Microsoft should either repair/replace the console, call them and explain the situation. Otherwise, if your warranty is out, you could replace the DVD yourself, there are many places to pick up the drives, ebay is a good place to start also would be able to help.

Please rate if at all useful, thanks!
